I got my Mac after I got sick with the whole Windows experience. I stuck with ME for two years, but Vista was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. So far, I've found the Mac much better than any PC I've ever had.

  • As I mentioned, I got sick of Windows and wanted something new
  • Looks great
  • Leopard is much more aesthetically pleasing than Windows and much more easier to use
  • No maintenance
  • No noticeable slowdown or lag since I've had it
  • Snow Leopard upgrade was only $35 CDN. Probably will cost a bit more to upgrade to 7 from Vista
  • Seems to be more value for the money since it comes with more programs than Windows (that aren't just trial versions)
  • I could still use Windows on the Mac if I wanted to through Bootcamp, Parallels or VMWare. Best of both worlds

All in all, yes, the Mac cost me alot of money, but I'm still happy with it and don't regret switching at all.

My parents bought the Macintosh Plus back in 1986 as our first family computer and ever since then I've been on a Mac when I'm at home. So I guess you can chalk it up to just sticking with what I know.

I always like not having to hassle with my computer and it just working, but thats just me.

Personally I'm on my third Mac though all of them still work and I use two regular.
500mhz PowerPC iMac (Graphite) - retired to the attic
1.8ghz G5 iMac - using it to type this
2.16ghz Core 2 Duo 13" macbook - for use when I was in college and traveling

I bought my first macbook about 8 months ago.
It's seamless and amazing, just as i expected.. never looking back!:D
No worry computing, I used to be so frantic about myself, husband, and kids.. what sites, no downloads.. ad/spyware VIRUSes  YUCK.. I kept out PC locked down like fort friggin knox:cool:SOOO much so it took alot of the fun out of it! Now If I want an app or a widget, I don't even think twice. I got 2 macbooks a few weeks apart. Now we are saving for a 24inch iMac to replace our one remaining desktop pc.

I love mail, safari, ichat, ical, office, finder, changing my icons:D and a whole lot more.. I have only had one issue backing up my copy protected DVD's. Mac doesn't seem to have very powerful decrypting to choose from. I really miss Anydvd/1ClickCopyDVD for burning. This is my only annoyance with it... I am considering running parallels??? But I am honestly terrified to open my mac up to windows issues like viruses/spy/adware etc... If I do, I think i will wait till I have an iMac set up and leave my macbook as is..

The simple answer is I will never waste another dime on a PC

and mac IS soooo SEXY

So yeah, my girlfriends family PC is BSOD-ing on a regular basis, she's going with her mum today to pick up SL, and is going to let her play around on the macs, and generally try to convince her to buy one :p

So: Why did you (preferably the average user) spring for a Mac?

The average user. Exactly. This is what Apple remembers to keep in mind when they design their hardware and software. The user end has been polished so well that i just couldn't keep away.

Other then that, I don't really have a reason for owning a Mac. If hackintosh-ing were easier and less complicated, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
If you get the right hardware it's not too hard.

It is the software that I like. The hardware is average right now. Maybe a little under average if you are a desktop person. Quad Cores that will run OS X well are cheaper than a Mini is. That is pre-built but from an off brand assembler. There has not been much improvement in the last few years with exception of the Intel i7. There is just no reason to go Apple with a desktop.

Even the Mac Pro is semi crippled. Yes the cable management inside is wonderful but there is just not enough space for HD's and not enough openings in the front. Then the only 2 that is there is limited to CD/DVD/BR/HD-DVD drives. Not that floppies are needed but there is lots of use for a 3.5 inch drive opening in the front. SD/CF etc readers anyone?

I've been thinking, and honestly, really, I can't really remember exactly WHY I got a Mac. And now, looking back at when I bought my Mac two years back, I'm starting to think that it wasn't the right purchase.

I'm one of those folks that had a mac back before OSX, in fact the first mac I used/owned was an se/30. I really started using the mac full time was with the bondi blue iMac.

Anyways the things that drew to the Mac over the PC was its ease of use. Even back then, the Mac was more expensive then PCs but the advantages over the PC were numerous then as they are now.

In recent years, I've re-evaluated my choices to ensure I'm working on the best platform - here's what I came up with.
1. Macs are more secure then windows. I maintain servers and workstations in my job and I see first hand the issues that crop up with them because of windows

2. Macs are more stable, requiring less reboots. I generally have to reboot a mac only when installing an os patch. windows needs multiple reboots for stupid reasons

3. The applications are better integrated and work better together, especially when you consider apple provided apps

4. no viruses - 'nuf said

5. sexy design - they look and operate awesome. Apple's attention to detail puts other manufacturers to shame.

6. market value and longevity, my Macs last longer and keep their value better then any dell/hp on the market hands down.

I've been thinking, and honestly, really, I can't really remember exactly WHY I got a Mac. And now, looking back at when I bought my Mac two years back, I'm starting to think that it wasn't the right purchase.

I mean, I don't really do anything on my Mac that I couldn't do on my PC. I occasionally use the iLife suite, and often use the iWork suite, but I can do those things on Windows too.

I'm just thinking, for the average user, what's the incentive to get a Mac, and not a cheaper PC?

Interestingly enough though, I've never thought that about my iPhone. That's one incentive. (Although I don't really take kindly to Rogers)

(All this being said, I'm probably going to be one of the first people running to buy the new iPod touch and Snow Leopard :p)

So: Why did you (preferably the average user) spring for a Mac?

Think, how would your PC operate now after two years compared to your Mac?

If a problem had arised on your pc you would have to deal with their horrid cs and run-around.

And well, you can see the threads here on Apples great CS.

I sprung for a Mac because I got tired of the constant hiccups. I'm not a very patient person at ALL. Period. I like for things to run smooth and it was time to get a new computer. Mac was my choice. So I searched the forums for a couple of weeks and decided to go with a refurb. I was disappointed at first because I had a problem with Airport's connectivity. Well, actually, it broke, and Apple fixed it fast, and they were exremely easy to deal it.

Everyone has their needs for what they look for in a computer.
Mine are;
Run smoothly (OS related)
Great people helping through problems (apple and MR members:))
Solid warranty (A warranty is only as good as the company standing behind it)
THAT is why I chose apple in the beginning.

I'm extra happy now because I use it for web design.

:apple:

I already answered the question earlier... but I just wanted to say that I use my MacBook for everything. Personal stuff, work stuff, web stuff, banking, recipes, drumming, reading, learning new stuff, blogging, keeping track of appointments, inventories, photos, streaming netflix to my large screen TV, music library, games and on and on... it hardly leaves my side during the course of a day. I hardly see that as possible with the kind of experiences I have had with PCs.

One thing it won't do... my mother has a Janome sewing machine and the software only runs on Windows, so she uses the Dell laptop for that. It will not work with a Mac. But then I don't sew, so I'm happy it does everything I need and way more.

I had a hellish time in late '07 with my own-build PC running XP. To this day I've not figured what the problem was- maybe the RAM or motherboard.

But having had to re-install Windows a few times and reinstall drivers, AV etc I was venting spleen on another forum and someone asked if I'd ever considered a Mac? I said no and they asked why, I just couldn't give an answer! I don't know why I'd never thought of a Mac. It wasn't Windows fanboyism, I didn't have any prejudices about Macs or Mac users. I think part of it was I didn't have a clue what Macs were capable of, what they ran etc.

The guy on the above forum posted some switchers videos, FAQ's etc and I liked the look of it. So I went to the Apple Store to try one out and absolutely loved it- just little things like Spaces, Quick Look and no anti-virus or anti-spyware/malware or drivers or defragging software or CCleaner or anything like that!

It's coming up on 18 months since I switched and I wouldn't go back to Windows. Having a Mac hasn't been the flawless 'everything just works' experience I'd been told about but it's been infinitely better than my XP days.
