So, it's time to switch to Android. They offering this great feature since over a year,

Yep. Please switch. Post in Android forums next about what you miss in iOS....

Or, make a suggestion on Apple's website for this feature. They read every suggestion and take them into account for new features.

They don't read this forum.

Because we don't all have unlimited data and will all the updates I been getting I would roll through my data so fast.

Then you would have the option turned off; but why not give the OP the option of yes/no?

Yes. Do this. Bye.

There's no need to resort to snark. OP is simply asking about the possibility to add an on/off switch for automatic updates.

I doubt Apple reads the suggestions posted to their suggestion box. Do you have evidence that they do read them?

Because Apple knows he would come to them complaining when an app update erased all of his data for that critical app, or when his favorite game ceased to work properly, or when an app he loved lost features he needed.

I'm guessing users already do that due to updating apps manually.

But, users should complain to Apple if an update screws up the app or their data. Otherwise, what is the point of Apple critically reviewing every single app and app update if not to find out critical errors in the code before it's released?

It's possible now for Jailbreakers!

Check out "Auto App Updater" on the ModMyI.com repo.

It does exactly that! I just installed it and it's perfect. For those of you that are worried that it's a bad idea to update apps without making sure they don't have "major bugs" should turn off auto updates for your mission critical apps in the settings. Problem solved.

Because people rely on apps, updates can make change certain features that are essential to the customer. Therefore, automatic updating is a no-no. Not just for the AppStore, but for all software. However, I don't see why it's not possible to give the option to enable in the settings menu.

Well they did improve the update system with delta updates. Plus they added File versions. I assume with a delta update there is a file that says what parts to discard, so reverse the discard and the app is back a version. If in the they improved those systems the next step they could add a version roll back that let you undo an update with the condition you have to go back to the data version before the update as well.

Call it Timemachine for iOS. I mean with flash storage wear leveling it stays in storage till the space is anyway until the space is needed, it might us well become user accessible and useful.

Ok Ok so the features that make that work haven't been well received and are in need of a lot more work to make them work better for developers, so they can make better apps for users.

Still if it they used on device version to have system that could roll back an update. To me there would be little reason to turn it off other than wifi/cell data.

Actually the snark started with OP stating that was a serious enough issue to abandon the platform.
Personally I don't care if Apple adds the feature. To me it doesn't even begin to register as an issue.
However I can see it being more important on Android due to the far more frequent rate of application updates. My N7 seems to be constantly updating apps, despite only having a hand full installed.

I can honestly say that in all my 3 years of Android usage, I've never had an app auto-update and then suddenly not work.

Good feature and I'm glad I have it.:)

As I said, on Android many apps update almost daily. On iOS it is closer to monthly and the updates tend to take less time to install (except for large apps like games).
It's a good feature on Android, but due to the nature of iOS updates it's simply less of a priority.

In my long-ago Android days, I found the auto-update was a royal PITA. It would freeze the app I was using, brick the phone, etc. Often required a battery pull to get back to normal and a p

I appreciate the manual update mode. For one thing, I can check to see what's changing, decided if I want it, and download/install at MY convenience, not theirs.

I wouldn't want a full-on autoupdate feature, but maybe an easy LiveUpdate system that lets developers add minor bug fixes or minor tweaks rather than have to push a whole new update for just 1 thing.

I guarantee you wouldn't hate it if you had an app auto-update and it lost all of your crucial data or left features behind that you considered critical.

99% of people have no clue whether an update is buggy or not. How would having an auto update option make any difference since most people will update anyways.

I have wrote AN OPTION TO TURN IT ON.

People don't like auto updates are not activating it. Like on Android. You can also set Automatic updates to WiFi only:

I HATE MANUAL updating apps. I hate it so much. :( :(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Steve Jobs was expressly against the idea of auto-updating because he viewed it as a security nightmare. See one of the responses in this blog here.

I think Apple's stance here is that there is nothing wrong with the idea of auto-updates until something goes wrong, by when it is too late to say in hindsight whether you should have left said option on or not.

It's like saying "The choice of whether to jaywalk or not is up to you". You know there are people who will take the risk, and who is gonna be responsible when something does happen? Apple's walled garden approach is like that of a strict parent who won't even let you take the risk in the first place.

But with him gone, who knows. :p

At any rate, it's not that Apple didn't think of it; they thought of it and made a conscious decision not to allow it.

On the desktop: I manually click "search for updates" and click update.
On the iPhone: I manually go into the AppStore/Updates and click update.
On the iPad: I manually go into the AppStore/Updates and click update.

Where is the option to turn auto updates on and off. I HATE the manual updating of all my devices. :( :(

It'll be feature # 276 on iOS 7!
