Regardless I will be gettin the iPhone sometime in October as I need to save up a couple more weeks. So then I get no free bumper? I don't understand why apple is not giving free bumpers after sept 30. Am I missing something?

they arent necessarily not giving them away

sept 30 is when they are "reevaluating" their options, and deciding if theres a better fix

so they might just extend the program, no one knows

Because Apple is not running a charity. They didn't design and manufacture the bumpers so that they can hand them out for free, they would eventually like to make a revenue.

Don't you have a credit card? If you technically won't have enough money on Sept 30 but will Oct 15 then just use a credit card because you will have the money to pay the balance before the end of the grace period following the end of your billing period.

Guy can afford a $230 cell phone with a plan of minimum $90 a month but can't purchase a case for himself.

Actually it's minimum $55 a month. But y'know, nice try.

The point isn't about being cheap re: a case. The point is Apple gave away the case because of a mistake they made. If the mistake isn't going to be fixed in September, why stop giving away cases?

The thing is, I think when Apple made that announcement, they were planning on coming up with a software fix, or some kind of repair alternative for the death grip that didn't require giving away Bumpers. If it turns out they *can't* do that, they will probably extend the free case program.

Because the cost of manufacturing such a precise and innovative rubber costs more than the profit Apple receives from the iPhone?

They might as well just include a complimentary bumper in the box.

Because Apple is not the Federal Gov't. or a social program here to hand out free bumpers for the rest of the iPhone 4's natural life. If you snooze you loose. Just do a couple of extra paper routes and you will have the money for the bumper too.

Personally, I think this is why they announced the date, so more people who think alike would purchase the iPhone before the end of September, which means more profit sooner!

You're totally right! Apple is cutting it close with the profitability of their products, they are having terrible revenue and profit, the ipad and new iphone didn't help the situation either :|. Those $0.10 rubber "bumpers" made in China are really going to cut into their 3.25 billion in profit!

*Note that their revenue is probably much much higher by now.

Sorry, I made no reference to their profit margin. If you are trying to read between the lines, get a pair prescription glasses.

ok, so if there is a slight possibility of a hardware redesign:

will the current iPhone 4 users get to switch to the new design?

@RonHC

Well, I didn't say I wanted it for free yeah? I am willing to pay, just not the full price.
Please refrain from sarcasm cause I don't get you.

-Lawrence.

IMO they're going to start packaging a black bumper in the box and start making colors again. Have you see what color apple bumpers are going for on eBay??? $50-$80 dollars. Apple won't have a problem creating revenue from the bumpers once they start making colors again.

Wow. $50 to $80 for a sucky bumper. This world will never cease to amaze. I'm going to have to start being one of these people who make a profit off the stupid.

And they don't make revenue selling over priced products to begin with? Come on, we all know Apple makes more than enough profit margin on their stuff. Giving away free cases won't break the bank. If they are going to sell a mostly glass surfaced cell phone, they should include a case with the purchase. They went from metal to plastic and now glass, the device is getting so fragile that you'd think Apple would include an Otterbox Defender case for crying out loud.
