Maybe to avoid people buying too many making them hard to get a hold of.

I will buy in a shop. Why pre order one when it takes 2-3 weeks and usually a full 3 weeks by which time others are using Iphone 5S's?

Usually you can pre order and get it on launch day. Now you have to go into the store. I guess Apple wants the lines again, or adding China into the mix had something to do with it

If we order the 5c and wanted the 5s could we just walk in on release day and exchange it?

I'm assuming that you'll still be able to purchase the iphone online at 12 am on the 20th though. It'll be the same deal as preordering but you'll have to wait at least an extra day to get the phone (assuming they overnight).

That would be nice.

Apple gave no reason. Perhaps Apple will weigh in later. ines will grow bigger now I bet L;)

This. Apple and the iPhone have lost a bit of luster as of late and considering this is a mild refresh, why risk having shorter lines than usual.

Also, I thought I recall reading that there was concern about how much inventory would be available do to shortages in fingerprint sensors. Would explain why you can preorder the 5C but not the 5S. So maybe this.

Just my $0.02.

keep in mind the 20th is a friday so you wouldn't get it until after the weekend.

The most popular educated guess as to why there are no 5s pre-ordered is because there are rumors of supply shortages. This makes a lot of sense given they are doing pre-orders for the 5c. They want to make sure they have enough supply in physical stores.

They already have a massive warehouse loaded with the iPhone 5S in Memphis, TN. You don't need to pre-order, they already have them here.

It's pretty clear. Apple wants lines and hype on launch day. Sucks for everyone who planned on preordering.

I have heard due to yield issues on the fingerprint sensor production on the 5S model is very constrained and might be in very limited supply for a while.

I don't think it's for hype; the stores that are usually crowded are already going to be crowded. I think it's probably because they don't have enough phones.

BUT you'd actually be ordering at 3 am est which is so early that they may ship them out same day...if early enough it could get there by the next day....amazon has gotten stuff to me in a day's time if i order it early enough.

Eh. Who knows. Honestly I just want to HAVE the phone...or know it's coming in the mail. I wouldn't even be in the market for one if my 5 wasn't stolen (and my stupid ass had insurance)

Then why not still able to preorder now with a later ship date? They clearly want people showing up to the store on launch day.

They have enough phones. We hear every year, supplies are constrained. Think about it, rolling out new phone and new cases....force people to go to store, see fancy new cases, and make a $39 impulse buy

Maybe because they know the demand will certainly not outweigh the supply? Look at all the voters who voted "Underwhelming" in another thread.
