I'll be ordering mine online. No way in hell am I waiting in those lines. I can barely handle the goddamn lines when I'm at the checkout at Target.

I'll be ordering mine from the Apple online store on the 20th. Getting it delivered sometime the following week beats waiting in line in my opinion.

I'm just wondering if they will start allowing orders at midnight on the 20th.

I can think of 3 possible reasons

1) Production issues. The Touch ID interface may have taken time to ready and less iPhones are ready for launch.

2) China. With China being a launch day market, first for iPhone, there would be less units for other markets.

3) Mix of 1) and 2).

They already have a massive warehouse loaded with the iPhone 5S in Memphis, TN. You don't need to pre-order, they already have them here.

This is probably true. I pointed out in another thread that when I ordered my iPad on black friday, it was 3AM Thursday. By 11 am Thursday, it was delivered to me from UPS (may have been FedEx now that I think about it). The closest distribution center to me (Pittsburgh) is in Lewisberry, PA: About 3 hour drive. I have no idea how they accomplished this.

Speaking with AppleInsider following Tuesday's keynote presentation, an Apple representative would only confirm that the iPhone 5s will be available online and that there would be no preorder program. No details were given as to why the system would not be used this year.

I'm guessing low quantities available or trying to drive news by pushing long Apple Store lines. I didn't see much of a line for the iPhone 5, arguably because of internet orders.

Luckily there is a Best Buy near my house that opens early on launch days and never has lines.

Yeah, Apple should take care of their VIP or hard-core main base.

Preorders will sell.

People will still go into stores and check out new releases.

In store will sell.

win-win

but pre orders are a nice acknowledgment to fans.

remember this is the hype machine we're talking about. they want to create the lines! lines = hype.

Same here. I think they're *******s for not allowing preorders, though.

They have an established base, with many of us doing yearly updates. Why annoy loyal customers? None of us will show up to stand in line and be suckered into an impulse purchase. I already decided I'd try one of their cases.

Tim Cook can kiss my ass. He's no Steve Jobs and he never will be.

They have enough phones. We hear every year, supplies are constrained. Think about it, rolling out new phone and new cases....force people to go to store, see fancy new cases, and make a $39 impulse buy

Don't be so sure. Remember that it took until like November last year before people were able to just walk into a store and purchase an iPhone 5. They were sold out everywhere at Apple stores and carrier stores for a while. Plus the long waiting times for those who ordered some online.

That was after the initial batch sold out.

Yup. Because only those who have nothing better to do will be hyped about camping out. That thrill was gone circa 2007.

This lack of preorders crap is annoying.

Congrats, you actually have common sense. Unlike the fools on here yapping about 'hype'

Last time I had to go in a line was for the iPad 2... When they had no pre-orders.

that ain't common sense
just a shot at the dark like what others are doing.saying

what does china have to do with presells in UK uSA or wherever. it's not like china's supply will ship to usa's presell orders

and what does not ready mean? apple not ready? oh goodness, isn't that a presell means? sell now, have time for more products, distribute at a later time? same thing, but get money ahead of time?

if i could presell u stuff and get your commitment and money, I'd take my time making the product and give it to u when i'm good and ready.

or not. perhaps take ur money and laugh all the way to bermuda.

i love business.

I still disagree. I mean, there's quite a bit of the world that does not have quick and easy access to an Apple Store.

What's more hype, saying we sold 5 million devices in three days because we had global sales, or we had 3 hour lines and far fewer sales because we just completely alienated a large portion of the population that doesn't live near an apple store?

I didn't preorder a iP5 last year, actually didn't even have any intentions of buying it but something came up that put me near an apple store so I went in just to take a look at it. It was about 2:30pm. There was no line anywhere so I assumed people already got their pre-orders. So I went up to one of the Apple employees at the front door and said do you have any iPhone 5 32GB AT&T White and she said yeah take this tag and go wait in that short line. 2 min later the guy walked up with my phone and activated. I was probably there maybe 15min max. So this year I'm going to do the same thing.

Overnight on a Friday for delivery Saturday is not likely. If it was a Monday launch maybe. Apple would be shelling out a lot of money for overnight on a Saturday delivery

I'm assuming that you'll still be able to purchase the iphone online at 12 am on the 20th though. It'll be the same deal as preordering but you'll have to wait at least an extra day to get the phone (assuming they overnight).

This a good way of bringing iPhone sales back to Apple retail stores from carrier and other retail stores. I think it's unlikely that a repeat of the iPhone 4 launch will happen.

Maybe not having the 5S as a per order is being used as a way to:
1. Encourage people towards the 5C
2. Simplify the logistics for them, but only having to deliver the 5C for launch day
3. Allows them and the carriers to focus on the 5C for the next few days and then bring the 5S in on the 20th knowing full well those who want it may complain but will still get it and will wait in line, massive media enducing good pr lines!
4. The stock issues others have mentioned

You mean 11 am Friday, right?
