Why no search function?

With all the hooplah around spotlight for macs and the apparent simplicity of having a search function for contacts, calendar, ipod, etc., how come such a function was not initially implemented in the iPhone? I know it's a dealbreaker for a few people, especially for searching pas calendar events.
