The iPad Pro does have a smart cover. Its mostly because of the Smart Keyboard that can be used as a case to protect the display. If Apple was really innovative they would have created the smart case with keyboard built in.

Keyboard case is going to be a flop. Separate silicone case and Smart Cover are a mistake back to the iPad 3 days when people dropped it a lot. It's the reason the came out with the smart case. Now they regress. And I would hate to drop a $1300 iPad pro. They'd did it to push you to a $200 keyboard case, it's not laziness, it's greed.

I prefer to be able to remove the cover.
Regarding dropping.....it's not hard to remember not to hold it by the open cover.

I assumed it was because some people prefer to protect the back, and some would rather not add the extra matter – instead of selling two separate products, make the back an add-on.

It doesn't seem like a big deal. When Apple doesn't make a single-piece case, others will. (Including a full case with a keyboard, of course.) I don't think the "greed" hypothesis really washes in light of that.

It's not holding by its cover, it's the fact the magnets are not strong and the iPad can slide off the cover pretty easily when you are carying multiple things.

Really? The only two options for this poll are "Apple is being lazy" and "They want people to buy the keyboard cover"?

They are releasing a standard Smart Cover, too, you know. Just like for the iPad mini 4 - a front and back cover. Yes, sold separately but there's no doubt that there will be a million third-party options to choose from, too.

I just don't understand why they didn't make this keyboard cover a keyboard case that fully protects the iPad Pro. I don't want to spend over a thousand dollars on an iPad with an exposed back. I love my iPad Air 2 with the Leather Smart Case. It's going to suck getting the "smart" keyboard cover for the Pro.

Probably because that would severely hamper the use of the iPad Pro as a tablet... especially when the Apple Pencil is featured so prominently. It is not convenient to remove the iPP from such a case to use it as a tablet.

Ideally, they should've produced something very similar to the Logi Blok case for the Air 2 (only a bit sleeker). They probably didn't because the immediate response would have been they Apple copied Microsoft (more than people are currently claiming).

Don't worry, 3rd party companies will produce some terrific keyboard cases.

If Apple is releasing a Smart Cover for the iPad Pro, they've forgotten to announce it, advertise it, or show it as an iPad Pro accessory on the iPad Pro page.

Are you absolutely sure Apple is releasing a Smart Cover for the iPad Prof? If so, what evidence do you have? I have no interest in the keyboard but would definitely be interested in seeing an Apple cover sans keyboard for the iPad Pro.

Edit: Thanks for the correction on this! Don't I feel dumb, LOL! :)

The only mention of it i could find on their website is for the pencil being able to be plugged in even with the silicone case

Absolutely.

From Apple's website:
Smart Covers and Silicone Cases
The perfect travel companions for your iPad Pro.

We’ve made Smart Covers and Silicone Cases especially for iPad Pro.1 The Smart Cover is crafted from durable polyurethane and comes in two colors — charcoal gray and white. The Silicone Case protects the back of your iPad Pro and is designed to pair seamlessly with the Smart Cover for complete front‑and‑back coverage.

Damn don't I feel silly then! LOL

I'm glad they exist as I currently have zero desire for the keyboard cover.

Are they going to be charing us twice? for the smart cover AND the silicone case for the back of the iPad. I don't intend to get the keyboard cover just the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, so a case that covers both the back and front would probably help with protecting it.

The smart cover/silicon back is not the same thing as the smart case. I really want a leather midnight blue smart case like the Air 2 has, but the smart cover doesn't come in leather. Apple only offers it in polyurethane. Not to mention that you're paying more to buy two pieces instead of just one.

No Smart Case has been announced that I've seen. Just the separate Smart Cover and silicone rear cover like for the iPad mini 4 (no leather Smart Case for the mini 4, either, at the moment).

I'm sure there will be plenty of 3rd party options though.

How would it severely hamper the use of it as a tablet? I have the Smart Case for my Air 2 and that is a tablet as well...having protection for the back of the iPad Pro wouldn't hinder it's use as a tablet in the slightest.

Snap! This makes me feel much better if Apple themselves is selling a cover for the back.

There's a difference between a "Smart Case" and a "keyboard case" which is what you said in the post that I replied to. It hinders the use of the iPad as a tablet because since it is a CASE you could only fold the keyboard back exposing the keys. The keyboard part of the case is much thicker than the cover of a smart cover causing an overall increase in bulk when having the keyboard folded back and using it as a tablet.
