Why not more tap controls for AirPods?

After a 6 week wait I've just received my AirPods and yes they live up to the hype.

But it seems apple had missed a trick with the tap controls.

With both right and left pods responding to taps surely it must be possible to allow Users to create their own controls.

Eg single tap on right is volume up. Double tap on right volume down

Single tap on left is next track
Double tap on left previous track

    Triple tap on left pause
    Triple tap on right play

I find Siri terrible on it. Every time I say volume up it calls a random person in my phone contacts- it's just not useable.

I really love how they instantly connect and the magnetic closures and the design is a thing of beauty.

But apple please allow more custom tap controls

I think Apple can expand on the usability of the taps with the AirPods. One thing to consider, is having all these different control options can sometimes be convoluted and confusing (Bragi for example, way to many controls). I do like the simplicity of having basic controls for ease and rememberance.

But I would like to see, it's some sort of type a touch capacative volume control, perhaps by sliding your finger up and down the AirPod versus using Siri or your iPhone.

Yes I'd like to see a capacitive sliding volume control but at $200 a pop I won't be getting v2

What if you only have one ear pod in at the time?

Yes good point but with the limited controls available I think many would benefit from a volume control

when i first bought them, I thought I'd want more controls. But after using them for several months I see the wisdom of simplicity. It's nice to have to think about which side to tap, have the pods read a double tap as just one if the pressure was not quite right, or worry about dislodging the pods. The single function, plus Siri, makes the whole experience very seamless and my sense is that more functions would cause more errors (let's face it the double tap accuracy could be improved). That being said, one more function (pause/play) in addition to siri would be nice if it could be executed in an error free way

Yes maybe it's an accuracy issue but I find Siri useless- the beam focusing mics don't seem to work for me. Every time I say volume up or next song it starts dialing a random person from my contacts.

Now a double tap starts or stops playing and it works consistently.

I'd be prepared to have more tap controls forever in BETA ( so apple can warn that it may not work reliably like tesla say autopilot is in beta)

Please apple can you do something like this??

I think some of these other Bluetooth earbuds that are on the market, use too many user controls/commands that become vexing. Apple wanted ease and simplicity with the AirPods. There are plenty of areas for improvement, but with the current battery expectations and W1 Chip, it's definitely a start. I would like to see some touch capacitive controls versus tapping, which I think will likely be in the future. But that latest update, improved the treble and bass, which they sound very good.

    Against more tap controls.

One tap is out of the questions, because this is not "touch sensitiven tap", but "gyro tap". So one tap is also a bump in the road or puting on a helmet or some other casual event. Two taps is a sequence and it registers as such.

Not being a native speaker, I find Siri very good on the Airpods, except if there is wind (weather, bicycling). With usual city noise it works well.

Looks like you got your wish (kinda) in iOS11,

Now able to choose between Siri, play/pause, next track or previous track on either AirPod.

Correct! You can now select tap commands independently on each AirPod.

    Yesss

    Thank you apple!!

    This is a great start.

Now just add tap tap volume control and it's utterly perfect
