Everyone wants a new GPU. The 8600m GT is a pretty garbage card next to my 8800GTX. But the MacBook Pro is a pretty garbage computer for playing games. If you want mobility, games, and Apple, and one computer, that's your own barrier. Just get a MacBook and build an $800 gaming PC that destroys the MacBook Pro, and will destroy the next two or three as well. All for $2000, the cost of the base MBP. If you really want to "provide value" for yourself, that's the only option that makes sense.
And that's what I did...

Was about to reply to FireFly's post but looks like the garbage men have done their rounds ;) <3

Anyhow, like I said in another thread, I think that it is more likely these rumors of specifically a "9600M GT" are misinterpretations of Ryan Shrout's article on the NVIDIA chipsets. I contact him and he cleared it up that he meant a "96**M" card, "based on
a slightly updated G92-based part".

At least I hope so.

Just to give a broader view;

Zepto has had a 14.1" laptop on the market with a 8600M GT. A few days ago a 14.1" with 9600M GT was announced.

LG's P300 is a lightweight 13.3" laptop that carries a 8600M GS. However the P310 is rumored to have a 9600M GT in a 13.3" size.

I believe the best card that fits in a 15.4" laptop is the 9800M GT. But I've only seen one laptop pack that so far.

For the MBP my vote goes to the 9650M GT. OP is right, a 9600M GT would make no sense. A 9700M GT would be nice, providing the machine still maintains a decent battery life which I'm note entirely sure of is possible.

the day i'm "thankful" for a GPU that i have to pay for somebody please shoot me!

on topic: i hope apple put a energy saving cool running midrange GPU in the MBP.

they should give a high end GPU upgrade option to the 1% gamers. or they should come up with dynamic clock speeds for the GPU or whatever saves energy in keeps the MBP cool. but please don't cram a GPU that i will never need into a notebook that overheats anyway as it is.

Being cool is obviously important, but with HybridPower, we can't really use battery life as a way of excusing Apple's unimpressive GPUs anymore. If you're on the go with a 9700M GT you can switch to the built in IGPU and save more battery life than you would having a 9600M GT in there.

Whether or not a 9700M GT would run too hot for a MBP though is a different matter, obviously probably not, but maybe innovation this time around will manifest itself in a practical breakthrough like that, rather than "omgzzz it's ever THINNER!". That's not really innovation if you ask me.

I can imagine that the little MBP gets a 9600 and the big one has a 9650 in it. That would make sense if we look at apples pricing behavior...
Another reason than just price doesnt exist to put the 9600 in, because it has the same power consumtion and may get even more hot as it is 65nm...

Well Apple is a bit more conservative, and likely makes some decisions based on shipping units meeting their design specs.

If it is a minor driver rewrite (like for a die shrink), might see Apple move quick ... but if it needs an all new OS X OpenGL driver -- we won't see it until it has been old news.

One of the major problem with not being able to simply use the Windows drivers, and it doesn't make sense for ATI/Nvidia to simply write drivers hoping Apple uses those chips either, unless they plan on making a Mac edition card anyhow.

Not quite. Not saying that the 9600M GT is the best, but exaggerating doesn't exactly make me agree with your post.

Actually, his post is very accurate.

My overclocked 8600M GT beats the 9650M GT and comes close to the performance of the 9700M GT.

What makes everyone think that the new MBP's will have nVidia GPU's? Just because the MB's are said to change to a nVidia chipset doesn't mean that the GPU in the new MBP will be one as well.

For all we know they could release a ATi 38xx, which id take over a nVidia GPU any day because ATi GPU's run core image better, and that means more to me then getting a couple more fps in games.

Because the 96xx series seems the most likely candidate due to the heat and power constraints. I doubt they could fit a 3850 Mobility inside the MBP.

For the love of god this has beaten to death!

If you want a gaming laptop BUY A gaming laptop!

This is NOT a gaming laptop. It's a macbook pro that can game.

I play plenty of games on my x1600 first gen mbp. I love this thing, runs osx and windows..........1 inch, 5 pounds, 4 hour battery life.........

If I wanted to game I'd go to best buy and buy that kick ass gateway with the 512 8800gt for around 1200............

This is a PRO laptop, not a normal regular consumer laptop......

I agree. Even if I do play games, the battery life is also important for me.

I wish Apple would stop treating it like a gaming machine then...seems to be the way its going unfortunately.

Just out of curiosity, can Hybrid SLI use both the integrated as well as the dedicated GPU at the same time? According to Wikipedia, The integrated one would assist the GPU to boost performance when the laptop is plugged to a power socket. If both can be utilized (assuming that the MBP also gets the integrated one), we would get the equivalent performance of a 9300/9400M GS + 9600M GT. I'm not sure how much of a boost that would give but for gamers it would be better than nothing (hell, it might even be better than just a single 9650M GT, who knows? :))

Keep in mind that SLI scaling doesn't apply to all applications though.

Thing is Seeing as the 9650GT is smaller, cooler, faster, and surely roughly the same price (And if not come on a 7811FX is 1300 and has a 9800GTS) And is undoubtedly better so apple is stupid if they don't use it.

So, Yixian, can you PLEASE go away now?

It's has hybrid SLI (I guess) with an 9400M IGP and a discrete 9600M, just like everybody knew it would.

wah-wa-wa-waaah I don't want it Mommy its not the best wah-wa-wa-waah I don't know WHAT I need :tears:

ALright, maybe I'll try it first before making a definitive conclusion.

I'm very happy that it's the 9600. My lap doesn't need to burn with the power of one thousand suns.
