Assuming it's true, probably to keep the look consistent for the new lineup. Or it could be that that's the way the new camera unit is packaged.

The vertical camera placement avoids interference with the Face ID module. It’s simply a matter of internal space restrictions.
Right, It’s not aesthetically pleasing, but the results of what the tri-lens camera can produce should be the largest leap since the dual camera introduced since the iPhone 7 Plus. I also want to add that most consumers probably don’t care what the back of the iPhone looks like, especially if it’s used in a case.

I'm more curious how much more dust Apple can cram behind that even larger lens cover... They managed to do a good job with the iPhone X/Xs and they have plenty more space to play with now lol

I have to admit, the colored square looks better than the black one. If Qualcomm was going back in this year’s release, I would upgrade in a heartbeat.

I'm curious how the camera functions will be improved more than I'm concerned about the aesthetics. Like stated above, my phone will spend it's days in a case.
