Not just iPads, but even all Macbook Pros and even the iMacs.
The only one I know is the iMac Pro which is 1080p.

Surely, there’s no technical limitation. I don’t expect 4K but 1080p should be the default.

Technically I suppose there are arguments to be made that fewer pixels (and therefore bigger pixels) may or may not result in less noise, or that lower resolution cameras reduce the amount of processing needed for their intended use as webcams, but I wouldn’t quite rule out Apple being stingy.

Because no one wants to see your grill close up in full HD? :D
Oh snap

and to op: I think iPad has a 1080p front cam? So that just leaves macs that have garbage front cameras and tbh there’s no technical reason. Really. All the people saying “well a larger mega pickle camera would take up more space and it needs to be thinner!” No. Not really. And that wouldn’t apply to the front camera on iMac desktops either since those have a lot of space.

I think the real answer is because there’s no demand for it. Apple doesn’t really use Mac for pushing...innovation. Apple tried to push the envelope on iPad and iPhone much more and Mac is kinda the red headed step child in many ways. Mac is spec bumps and weird keyboard experiments. They don’t really care about Mac like their other products.

To go farther: I think Apple really believes
iPad is the future of computing and the Mac is just here until it becomes powerful enough

are you serious. All iPad Pros with the exception of the first gen iPad Pros have 1080p Front Camera

as of the non Pros only Air 3 and Mini 5 have 1080p, the rest of them have 720p

you could of easily went to the “compare iPads” part of apples page and looked that up
