I have no dobut that Longhorn will not only surpass Quartz Extreme, but Microsoft and all of the ISVs on the PC platform will make meaninful use of the capabilities in the UI. (Longhorn will be modular as well, there's much more going on than GDI++). I'm not saying one is better than the other, I'm just saying I believe that is going to happen regardless of our personal preferences. And it will affect Apple.

You would need to be able to see the future to truly have no doubts. Longhorn won't be due until the "successor" to Panther is on it's way. I find it hard to believe Microsoft will ship functionality equal to Apple.

In addition MS is pushing hardware developers to design more aesthetically pleasing hardware. So, if you remove the advantage of designe and aesthetics, what's left? Overpriced hardware.

MorganX- you still don't understand what makes Mac users tick do you. It's ALWAYS been the OS. Longhorn as I've seen it just isn't appealing as an OS. Believe me Apples design hasn't always been as good as it is today.

I just don't seem to share the enthusiasm for PCs that some people do even though I have two myself. What I see coming from Microsoft is the further commercialization of the OS. Microsoft is headed to an area in which the OS becomes a vehicle to pitch services and products. Soon their customers will be told that their computer needs to be a card carrying member of the "Trusted Computer Platform Alliance". Who's trust? We know that is in small commodity where consumers are involved.

I believe that the facts are simply PCs are cheaper computers and here in the US people LOVE cheap. However I have NO hope that Microsoft is burning the midnight oil to make their OS easier to use for consumers.

Apple will be fine. New hardware...new focus will put them deep into the black. They seem to be making the right decisions and it'll take more than a Vaio to sway those who have experience the "magic" of Macintosh to sway.

What I don't understand is why you'd buy 3 laptops that all sucked. I can understand 2. The first cause it's a Sony, it must be good. The second because the first was a fluke but the third? No offense but I don't understand this...

They weren't my main machines, I was using them for something that required windows at the time. The first VAIO I had for a year actually, and sold it for only $200 less than the origina price. The 2nd was the U-1 (6"screen) that was a big mistake so I sold it off within a week at no loss. The third I still have for occasional use, but I may sell it soon.
In all honesty, I bought them because I needed them (well, the first and second) and because they have excellent resale value here (in Japan.) It goes without saying that I'm never buying a windows machine ever again.

some one made a great point about pcs and prices and what you get for the price if you look at a mac what are you getting just have a look and you will see that they are made with good quality matrials and a dam fine OS.....

This so called 970 represents a so called leap foward but if you think about it it dosnt seem to take apple foward to much it kind of catches up with cheap lowend priced pcs that er well fall aaprt after a year i got a so called deacent pc a year ago and well its already strugling to deal with a lot of simple tasks and it keeps catching virus no thanks to Norton IT CAME WITH THE SYSTEM....

If you buy a 699 dell exspect to get intergrated sound video a crap HD A CRAP MOINTOR A CRAP MOUSE AND KEYBOARD OH AND A REAL CRAP OS THAT IS FULL OF MORE BUGS THAN A BUG SHOP....

At least with apple you know that extra bit of cash is buying you a deacent bit of equitment that is going to keep a deacent value on it if you intend on selling it in 2 - 4 years time not like pcs were there well free to a good home sort of things..

well thats what i think at least

I agree you don't just have to look at the internal hardware of the machine either, I mean look at the TiBook and the new Powerbooks compared to Vaios made from cheap plastic that must cost all of £1 to make. Not only is the OS much better than XP and will continue to be so...let's face it is always has been. Windows will forever be playing catup with Mac OS and that will be the cause of their failing as they try to emulate not invent. Look at Windows Movie Maker trying to be iMovie, I know PC users that would kill for an app like iMovie to be with their system.

Overall you get what you pay for, even if the performance isn't sparkiling when compared to a cheaper windows box that isn't the whole of the equation.

[crazy thought]

what if steve jobs is reading this thread right now (and hundreds others PPC970 threads) and giggling lke nuts because when he releases the new PPC970, it'll be 4-5GHz and will definitely be surprise for the computing world...:D ;) :p

[/crazy thought]

i know..it's stupid..but hey, a man can dream, can't he.? ..;)

Yeah, Jobs is probably overhyping the Panther to make the 970 even better sounding. If you give away all the information for your product (i.e. DOOM III) it probably won't be that successful. Remember the old switch campaigns and the current iTunes campaigns? Jobs will probably lead a new campaign soon, and it should be a gaming campaign. Could you imagine how many people would switch once when a PC game is released, a Mac version is released as well? eh, just another crazy thought.

Actually, I don't consider OS X to be competing with XP or Longhorn for business/enterprise computing

So OS X Server means nothing to you?

Who uses XP in the server/enterprise anyways?

Usually it's Windows 2000 or a *nix varient.

I do think Sony's Vaio line of computers are threat to Apple. Apple draws in people with ease of use and great features in one attractive package. Sony Vaio matches that with great features in one attractive package at a lower price.

>>So OS X Server means nothing to you?<<

No it doesn't. SOHO maybe.

>>Who uses XP in the server/enterprise anyways?<<

XP/2000 are preferred clients.

>>Usually it's Windows 2000 or a *nix varient.<<

2000, 2003. Smoke *nix except on legacy web servers.

What it probably meant was that Apple was looking for an additional developer so as to hasten the process as well as announce to the world that they were developing a windows version. Your assumption is probably erroneous.

Yeah, that's exactly what I thought when I first heard they were looking for a developer. To help speed along the existing development.

"Longhorn as I've seen it just isn't appealing as an OS."

Keep in mind it's an alfa at best we're seeing now, so I'd expect a bit more coming out of redmond during the time remaining to launch. Still, I naturally expect apple to have an OS out that will kick longhorn's butt when that day rolls around =P
