Can someone explain the utility of Pastebin? I understand how it works; I'm just wondering why it exists and if anyone uses it for development. Their FAQ isn't that enlightening.

It's a quick and easy way to share code snippets - often useful when working with other programmers and you want to talk about a specific piece of code, or share a snippet from a log file.

Personally I prefer GitHub's Gist's (http://gist.github.com) - same concept, but it since as they are tied to your GitHub account.

Very useful in IRC or IM chat - when you don't want to flood the conversation with 5 or 500 lines of code!

This. Sharing code on IRC pretty much makes pastebins essential. It is also good for sending code snippets via email where is might muck up the formatting.
