Generally speaking, and this is true of all ports they have removed, apples mantra is simplicity. Jobs was very into Buddhism and the beauty in simplicity. This continues into their products where they try and strip back as much as they can to make the machines as elegant as possible.

Some people love this, some people hate it. But they've always been this way.

Then I'd suggest you focus on why the Canon camera isn't showing up in Finder. Clearly the MBA & Photos app will work with other Canon equipment.

Most likely reason is something with a setting in the camera. Since you've not mentioned the model I can't suggest anything specific.

Solve that and it should show up in Finder & Photos.

Got it working. WIFI has to be turned off on camera to connect with cable. I'm sure there is a way to connect to computer via WIFI but it seemed it would only connect to the phone.

USB-C is no more than good old USB 3, DisplayPort and charging moshed together into a single connector.

You missed:

  • Thunderbolt in the same port
  • 100w charge capacity
and yes, the same stuff in the same connector, plus 100 watt charge capacity is ENTIRELY THE POINT

No we aren't YET in a world where USB-C is the only port you need (and the cable compatibility issues are pretty rough at the moment - not all type C cables are capable of 100W and thunderbolt for example), but until someone forces the issue and makes the legacy ports "legacy" we won't ever get there.

You know what you do today if you want that sort of life? You buy a USB-C monitor with a type A hub in it, so you get a single cable for charge, USB hub, etc.

And a dongle for if you need those things while you're away from your desk.

There are PCIe bandwidth limitations (number of lanes out of the CPU) that preclude putting an infinite number of ports on these things and Thunderbolt3 capable USB type C ports consume a LOT of PCIe lanes.

My mom has a MB air 2017 and it has a SD card slot. Its also lighter than my MacBook Pro 2020. I don't know why apple removed the SD card slot. It seems they went downhill in their design.

Because they stuck outside of the case and non-pro users lose them all the time.

Its not always 'screw the customer', but if the option for Apple is include a 50¢ SD card slot, or charge the consumer $100 for more onboard storage (or that for an external ports block), you can be pretty sure which way they will go.
Form over function has also long been an issue for Apple - preferring cool looks over practical needs. This sometimes comes to bite them in the ass, but mostly, it ends up being the consumer's that's in the sling.
Reading at the time what the 2018 MacBook Air was going to offer (or, in fact, not offer) was the impetus for me to buy a 2017 to replace an older MacBook - love me all my legacy ports, even if I don't use them every day. Oh, and the standalone MagSafe. Retina screen? Meh. Don't care.

You do realize that there's far more to worry about than the actual cost of a reader when including it in a laptop, right?
