Changing resolutions for games is more "CRT-like" in that you don't get the drastic quality drop from running at a resolution less than but close to native.
Max settings is unrealistic. Dropping the quality settings to boost resolution is a compromise gamers are used to making.
 
Most PC games are designed to be completely resolution agnositc. You can set them to 4K/5K today. Textures may not always be sharp.

In the very article this thread links to, they run the games at 4K...lol.
