it's just a justification for buying things we don't need ie someone else will make good use of the old version so it makes good sense for me to buy the new version.

gender has nothing to do with it other than maybe guys tend to be more techie than ladies are generally

I don't think guys are more techie, per se, I think we're just more apt to purchase a new iPhone within a year of purchasing the last one just to have the latest, (perceived) greatest gadgets.
