Hey everyone,

I'm quite new on this foruman get a lot of good feedback and decent replies. Therefor I have a good feeling about this forum.

But one small point I do have to make, why are people thumbing so many posts down. Some of my posts also included and most of the time I see being done that is when someone puts some sarcasm in his/hers writings. I know that if you don't want this forum to become a kindergarten you have to correct eachother where needed and set a standard to keep conversations on a higer level. But mostly everytime I try to put some sarcasm in my writings or a funny line(believe me I know I am not that funny) it gets thumbed down. At least give someone props just for the effort instead of thumbing it down, just saying.

Some lightness can never do any harm, right?!

I'm pretty sure that correcting one another (over little things [i.e. grammar errors]) is against the rules.

But you really shouldn't be that offended by people thumbing you down. It's really not that big of a deal.

Yeah.

Wait, -1 is bad?

O, no wait, we stopped that didn't we?

Oke good to know about the grammer, will keep this in mind. I'm not offended really, I just find it, well a bit awkward. See someone thumbed down my first post on this thread already, why for god sake, is it that bad? I'm just being honest and only would like to see some usable feedback.

My suggestion, when this feature first came out, was to only allow increments, but not decrements -- like the "Like" feature on Facebook. If a comment was popular it would have a high "+" count but it couldn't go less than 0.

In the end you learn to ignore the -1's, there's always going to be someone that disagrees.

My guess is because it's a bit ironic to -1 a post questioning why people -1 posts.

Don't worry too much about the -1's. It seems to me it's a response from someone too lazy to actually post a reasoned challenge or response.

Someone who takes the time to post a response to you (positive or negative) is the one deserving of your attention. ;)

Edit: Thanks for making my point.

Edit 2 : OK, it's really beginning to hurt now :(

Methinks Admin is playing with the up downs in this thread.

I guess Macrumors is slowly turning into Reddit :D

On reddit people up vote the decent stuff, so not really :(

KnightWRX summed it up nicely:
It's become a popularity contest more than anything. It doesn't denote quality or lack thereof of a post, it only denotes the mob mentality. Positive means you've posted to please the mob, negative means you've angered the mob.

All it serves is to promote people making sheepish responses to get positive votes. Just go with the crowd and the flow and don't mind the facts too much.

This feels like the end of Scarface when Tony's yelling "Come on! I'm still standin', Come on! Go ahead! I take your *********' bullets!" while being shot repeatedly.

Just replace 'bullets' with 'down votes'.

I just don't agree. I vote +1 if I agree, and -1 if I disagree with a poster but don't have anything further to add (usually because what I was going to say was already said). I don't want to type "Agreed" or "+1" or just type out the same thing someone has already said because that doesn't add anything to the thread.....well, besides clutter.

To state that people only vote +1 or -1 because they're sheep or because they want to "please the mob" is a bit ridiculous.

You realize, of course, that you and I are probably the only ones old enough to get that reference. :p ;)

I got it too. ;)

I think the poster started this thread as a ruse to establish a record for the "most negative votes on a MacRumors post". -10 and counting...how low can you go? ;)

You != everyone. Judging by most votes it seems to be used as 'like', 'dislike' rather than 'agree', 'disagree' with no bearing on the usefulness or factual content of the post.

Personally I'd love to see a Safari extension which hides the voting options so I'd never have to consider it.
