I have an 11" macbook air and over the past couple days I've been thinking about how cool it would be if they kept the same size and form factor, but put more screen where the bezel currently is. I understand there needs to be some bezel, but my macbook air has an inch all the way around. It seems to me a 12" or even 13" screen could fit.

Is such a wide bezel necessary?

Part of the "Air" design; the lid tapers to a point gradually on the edges. With a larger screen it would have to be more abrupt because the distance from screen-width to edge-width would be shorter, and it would end up looking odd or force the lid to be thicker on the edge.

Not saying this is a good reason to have a bigger bezel, but it's what they chose to do with the body's design.
