Whatever Apple releases will be a good solid update. I'm hoping/expecting something like this:
  • A5 dual core + SGX543MP2
  • IPS 2048x1536 res display
  • Lighter weight + similar battery life
  • FaceTime (front + rear cam)
  • SD card slot, no home button, new design and a better speaker

I can't wait until it's announced then I can know for sure!

Which led to this....

The majority of what I wrote we will get, if not all of it. The A5 + SGX543 is pretty much guaranteed, as is the rest of it except the retina display which evidence quite strongly supports Apple is at the very least testing it, I expect we'll get it too.

If the majority of what you posted (specs wise) was guaranteed, why did you feel it needs to be announced? Just shows, no matter people's opinions or beliefs, nothing is set in stone until it is on the retail shelf. Even you are unsure.

Marketing sells the product, but that doesn't stop anyone from returning it. And, iOS's multi-tasking is great -- Android's multi-tasking isn't that much different.

Have you used a developer's preview kit of honeycomb? Granted, 2.1 & 2.2 have similar multitasking, but 3.0 will play a major role in shaping the future of tablet OS' for the better.

Ah, I see. You're comparing a released OS (iOS 4) to an unreleased OS (Android 3 "Honeycomb"). Given that iOS 5 will be expected soon after "Honeycomb" is released (based on a roughly yearly release cycle and given that iOS 4 is about 7 months old now), it would seem that that would be the better comparison. But, of course, as Apple plays things close to the chest, so to speak, we don't know much about iOS 5 yet, and probably won't until we're close to the official launch time.

I do get tired of people comparing products that haven't been released yet to Apple's currently available products. Or comparing brand new products to Apple's products late in their product cycle. It's just a game of one-upsmanship, and it's using false differences to try to make points.

Now, I am never one to say that Apple's products are perfect. Far from it. I can often appreciate where the competition has done better. It is just that those who try to "win" using pathetically chosen comparisons, whether they be biased toward the competition or toward Apple (the proverbial "fanbois"), really bug me...

I disagree. The iPhone upgrade from 3G to 3GS was far more substantial than the upgrade from 2G to 3G:

2G->3G: Changed back to plastic, added 3G radio, added GPS, and... well that's it.

3G->3Gs: Faster processor, double the RAM, updated graphics, double the HSDPA data capability, higher res camera, magnetometer, and voice control.

The 3GS offered much more than the 3G did.

Didn't the app store get introduced during the 3G era? If so.... It's the biggest change which would completely make your point invalid :p if not then my bad :p

Agreed, we need to compare say an iPad2 with iOS 5 against whatever the leading Android tablet is as the time to have a fair comparison.

On that point. Do we all think iPad2 will launch with iOS 5 ?
The feeling I get, whilst just a guess is that the User Interface is not going to change hardly at all for the next iPad.

Correct. However, despite certain fanboys dismissing 3.0 as purely vaporware and non-existent, while true... 3.0 will surface in one form or another. All being well, within Q1 2010.

Correct again. Rumors ( I know, these rumors are terrible when they do not pan out to be what we either hope for or expect ) point towards a minor, evolutionary update to iOS5 and not a major overhaul. We can all hope that will change though.

That makes two of us. I'm sure we all get tired from time to time where people try and claim they are in the ascendency when it comes to making their points known on the future of one computing platform versus another. This unfortunately extends into most aspects of life.

Now, I am never one to say that Apple's products are perfect. Far from it. I can often appreciate where the competition has done better. Ah, I see. If you feel I have used a pathetic chosen comparison with honeycomb 3.0 to the current iOS4, power to you. However, what you typed can be viewed as a double edge mechanic. Speaking generally, [or directly] towards my post, people who have different views sometimes sadly think the opposing view is pathetic. Agreed, fanbois on both sides need to get a grip. The game's changing.

Peace.

;)

I doubt iOS5 will be released until the Q3 2010 (maybe late Q2 if we're lucky).

If your guess turns out to be true, then iOS4 (as will be iOS5) IS a true comparison between Apple's iOS for it's iPhone/iPad products and Android 3.0 tablets.

The app store had nothing to do with the hardware (the original phone got the app store too, after all).

I don't understand how people can think that the 3G was a larger upgrade from the original than the 3GS was from the 3G. Here's a desktop computer analogy (try to follow along Mac users):

Case 1) You buy a new case for your computer and take every part from your old case and put it in the new case. You also install a wireless G networking card.

Case 2) You buy a new processor, another stick of RAM, and a new graphics card. You install them in your current computer, replacing each respective component. You also install a wireless N networking card and replace your webcam with an updated model.

Case 1: you basically have the same computer that looks newer. Case 2: you basically have a brand new computer that looks the same.

Which upgrade is better?

He did mention voice control which I presume is a software feature? :p either way I wonder if this topic is still about hardware impact or impact in general from device iterations?

Here is why the iPad 2 won't be a huge update.
The iPad had and still will have a remarkable market share of the tablet market this year. Apple is gonna do what they did with the iPhone and simply let it make as much money as it can before the "competition" catches up to them in market share. I think the next iPad will have minor new features. Cameras front and back, minidisplay port and some other small little features but nothing that is gonna make the iPad's profit margins small for Apple.

As Apple did with the iPhone there gonna make a ton of cash until the competition heats up in 2012 with android.

There won't be any change in display resoultion with the next iPad. There will be a proccesor and gpu bump.

Anyone else agree?

Well, obviously. The current iPad has the sense of being an "incomplete" product, missing some key features-- cameras most noticeably. As has been pointed out by many, for a product that is so dependent on third-party apps, time to market is critical, and Apple left things out in order to get an initial offering out as fast as possible. So, pretty clearly, iPad v.2 is going to focus on filling those holes.

Thinking the iPad 2 will "outspec" it's competition? If you feel that is true, you haven't followed Apple very long. Spec's clearly don't mean anything to SJ and he's calling the shots. User experience and having it work as he see's fit does.

While I don't care one way or the other, I think it's a given a front/rear camera will show up.

I hope and believe it will get a ram bump, CPU/GPU bump and beyond that it's all a bonus to me.

FaceTime camera, better processor, resolution, different ports, different hookups, none of this really matters. They will sell millions to Macheads and the Average Joe. I'm planning on getting one regardless of new features, just because.

And things "heating up" with Android in 2012? Nothing's heating up, they're years behind. By 2012 Apple will be putting chips into people's brains with everything streamlined and years ahead of everyone, because everyone else is just plain stupid.

The only thing I want from Apple is a ****ing software update for the iPad that changes the orientation switch back to an orientation switch, or gives me the option to choose. They had it right the first time, why start screwing it up? I've never had to mute my god damn iPad, but I change orientations every 30 seconds, so here I am with 4.2 mashing the home button like a jackass every time I want to look at a widescreen photo. Totally off-topic, but this guy pissed me of and made me rant.

I'm not even sure it has a real competition to "outspec" friend. I see people all the time walking down the street with iPads in hand, but I've never seen an Android tab or Windows slate or whatever the hell those morons are making.

Surprising amount of people predicting the future with such incredible certainty lately.

I honestly hope your right.
But if you look at apple's history, market share isn't normally there goal, profit is.

Apple's goal is to maximize LONG TERM profit. Apple's market share right now is less than 5% because over 90% of the tablet market hasn't bought a tablet yet.

iPhone 2G -> 3G wasn't a huge upgrade because they didn't anticipate how quickly Android would overtake them. They won't make the same mistake.

but I've never seen an Android tab or Windows slate or whatever the hell those morons are making.

That's not really a very balanced viewpoint you have there now is it? :(

So all other major electronics companies apart from Apple are Morons?

Pretty much the same reason anyone posts... did you not yourself write: "Unfortunately, what you're expecting will not translate into an official iPad update"?

And no, nothing is set in stone however: considering the rumours, the not insubstantial amount of evidence found, and other factors, it's easy to calculate that the next update will be significant.

I think it can all be said like this: Apple isn't about to give up it's strong dominating share of the slate market by releasing a weak update.

Have you used a developer's preview kit of honeycomb? Granted, 2.1 & 2.2 have similar multitasking, but 3.0 will play a major role in shaping the future of tablet OS' for the better.
No, I've not. Perhaps, we'll see.

Which is why I used the word "unfortunately", it's not wishful thinking, but realism that is the game changer here.

From a totally logical and common sense point of view, I totally agree with this statement. Apple will had a solid 1 year lead on any serious tablet competition when they launch iPad2.

You would think it would be so obvious to Apple that they need to release a strong update to totally fix their position as the no.1 product to buy without question.

I look forward to seeing just how good the iPad2 is on launch day. I am hoping it will be at least as good as anything else on offer.

I expect to see more ram, faster processor and a larger speaker. That's it. Neither of them are worth selling my iPad and upgrading at this time.

Which is why I used the word "unfortunately", it's not wishful thinking, but realism that is the game changer here.
You're still saying it won't happen. My point was, everyone posts for a similar reason, to express their opinion -- it doesn't matter if that person is convinced or not that what they're saying will happen.

Anyway, I'm not doing any "wishful thinking", I've thought since the get-go that the iPad 2 will have a retina display based on the fact that it'd be a big plus in the market -- particularly for market, and now ~6 months later we've got some evidence that their at least testing it.
