I see your point about the gaming. I've only done a little looking into the GPU/gaming connection but from what I can recall Mac GPUs don't come close to a Windows box configured for gaming. I haven't looked specifically at the rMBP. Depending on what games you play you may have to make some compromises. There is plenty of info online to help you decide if you can live with it...

I can appreciate your desire to consolidate your computer usage into one platform. But serious gamers who use Macs tend to have a separate computer for playing games. And there is always the game console route if the games you like are available. One upside to keeping the Windows computer is that you would have a backup computer should something go wrong with the Mac.

Also, I'd like to look at it as a discipline that since it's not the biggest gaming computer, I'll be able to concentrate more on school? Might make some sense.

Yeah the backup desktop is nice to have, but I don't really have anywhere to put it when I clear space for the MBP.

Your discipline for school should be there regardless of the type of computer you have. After your schooling is over and you land a cool job, you can afford any computer you want. ;)

Guys: I DID return my macbook pro 2011 for the 2012 retina and id like to talk about it.

It was REALLY crisp and clear and the screen looked so crisp and vivid it looked fake (If that makes any sense lol)

But the only problem was how BLURRRRRRRYYY it looked on pictures with words. I was watching a documentary on youtube with the retina and it had typed out words on the video and it gave me a head ache because it looked shady.

I noticed after an update the lag when going into launchpad or mission control went away ( :D was so annoying!)

I find when I played games it looked funny because i had to use a lower resolution and it looked blurry ( :( )

The retina on the macbook pro is just.... BEAUTIFUL but unfortunately the blurryness on some websites and pictures and ADOBE FLASH supported sites made me go nuts and i winded up selling it and getting a new high resolution 2011 version (My other one was 1440 by 900)

and going back to non retina sucked... I WILL buy the retina again in a year (I know it sounds dumb) but hopefully by then ALL flash supported sites will have retina resolution support. And maybe they will keep the thicker macbook pros and just add retina as a display option for 500$ more and you can keep the superdrive and be able to upgrade stuff on your own (who knows?!! maybe apple is losing money from that display ghosting problem and apple would have to lose money to replace the whole laptop!!!!) and maybe they will make the current MBPR a macbook air retina 15" that also could have retina options.. which i doubt would happen....

OH YA: and i returned my MBP non retina on the 14th day for the retina ( I didnt post on forums about it) and i sold my macbook retina to go back to the non retina a week ago

I cannot for the life of me understand why they don't offer retina display for the legacy mbp, that way if your want the nicest screen with a heavier but upgradable laptop you can have it or you can with the nicest display with a lighter but completely closed off laptop.

For the same reason GM never advertised the LS1 Z28 being the same as the Camaro SS or TA WS6 which had the same ( raw power / LS1 motor ) as the C5 Corvettes!

If the legacy aka cMBP had the Retina, it would cannibalize sales from the rMBP!

BTW, interesting user name ' IGotBush ' :D

Isn't apple losing money though??? If the RMPB has a LCD problem (like the ones with the LG) dont they have to replace the WHOLE screen?!! Because thats what people are saying that have the problem. And I think Apple will be losing a lot of money since the machine is almost un-fixable. So I think apple might make a user-upgradable macbook pro retina with legacy like what i said in my other post.

about 1/5 macbook pros would probably need a quick fix but with the Macbook pro retina apple will be gaining a little profit off of each macbook pro retina.

HOLY CR@P this thread has almost 17,000$ views!!!!!! My gosh!

When I had a 2009 pro screen issue, they replaced the whole screen (backcking included). I don't know if they still do that now but I'd imagine so.

Yeah, bashing a really nice laptop with subpar reasons does tend to rile up the masses.

The creative professional market, which is primarily Mac based. Look through my post history if you want detailed reasons as to why. Long story short, performance robbing and technical issues with working on graphics on a 2x resolution display.

I'm currently using mine to work on VFX for a major upcoming feature film. Wrong much?

Actually I've done more creative work on my rMBP then I ever got done on my massive, stuck at home, Mac Pro. This thing is an artists dream! All the power and fully portable! But I'm assuming you are just saying what you think is right and obviously have NO experience in professional creative arts.

Really? You're working with million polygon scenes and rendering massive particle and fluid simulations on your MacBook anything? Are you telling me that they created Avatar and the like on primarily laptops? My point is that the really heavy lifting can't be done on this, or any laptop for that matter.

And yes, since you're doing VFX, you have more experience than me, but I'm in college studying motion design, and I am aware that my next computer will be a desktop because A, I'm on a budget and can afford both a laptop and a high quality large screen and B, desktops have better graphics card offerings for 3D viewport performance, which you undoubtedly know because you're an experienced professional. My inexperienced mind finds it laughable that you can get more work done on a laptop with a mid-range consumer GPU than a Mac Pro, but then again, I'm just a lowly student.

I don't do particles. I am a compositor. So, I am working with 156CG plates simultanously and also using 3D projection as well and having no problems whatsoever! And yes...all on a laptop connected to a 30" display and a 24" 3D display. I also, both own a Mac Pro, and have one at my desk at work. My personal Mac Pro is now boxed up and ready to sell (if you're interested PM me) and my work Mac Pro is used as a render box. I just screen share into it and kick off renders while I work on my rMBP.

While, no, they are not using laptops to make "Avatar", they could. I worked on Green Lantern and the computer I was working on was no more powerful than my rMBP.

I stand corrected then...At least about compositing and the like. I'm also rather envious of your job. I hope to be doing high end VFX someday, but it's mostly motion design for now. I do really like it, and I think that I'm pretty good at it, at least for being a sophomore in college. My 2008 MacBook Pro has been good for getting most of my reel done, but the 24 hour-long renders for 150 frames or less and stuttering with C4D scenes with only a moderate amount of polygons is starting to get old. I'm planning on getting a top end iMac when it's updated (which is only marginally better than a laptop, I know, but the GPU is supposed to be top end) but thanks for the offer for the Mac Pro.

It takes time. I graduated college in 2001. I was mainly studying animation with Maya. Took a while to build a career.
