Why update text from ATT?

Not sure why they would send it or how they would know your firmware version.

His phone is jailbroken. He changed his carrier logo. Mine says my name instead of AT&T.

Yes, that's the message. I am on 2.2, but when you click that link, it takes you to an Apple site to download 2.2

The Hong Kong Carrier (3) does it all the time, for all firmware versions. In fact, they've been doing this since 2.0.2

When I asked, they said they track the firmware version of iPhones using their carrier.
