It doesn't sound like you need to upgrade. As a 3G user, my situation with my phone does call for an upgrade. The 3GS supports multitasking so you should be good for a year. And next june they will release another one, which will be better than this one.

Im in the same boat as I too have an 3G and have been waiting to upgrade. Though the 3GS is a good improvement on the 3G, IPHONE 4 is a huge jump from the 3G. So since Im going to obvisiously upgrade into a phone. The multitaskiing, folders, nike plus support, better form factor, facetime, display, hd recording, gyroscope, etc, etc. has me salivating. I cant wait to upgrade, but if you dont really need to jump in the IPHONE 4, dont.

I can understand if the 3GS is good enough for you (assuming you already own one), but if you think the iPhone 4 isn't a major upgrade, you are insane.

The upgrade from the 3GS to the iPhone 4 is a bigger upgrade even than from the original all the way to the 3GS. Here's what each upgrade brought:

Original to 3GS

-New design
-3G radio
-GPS
-Improved camera
-Video recording
-MMS
-Improved battery life
-Faster processor
-More RAM
-Improved headphone jack
-Compass

3GS to 4

-New design
-802.11 N WiFi
-Improved camera
-HD video recording
-Video chat
-LED flash
-Front facing camera
-Improved battery life
-Faster processor
-Improved resolution (this is huge)
-Improved display (IPS LED)
-Dual mic for noise cancellation
-Gyroscope

My parents have decided to get an iPhone now that the data fees are less per month, so I'm getting a new one and giving them my old one. Otherwise, I wouldn't even be thinking about it. I'm still kinda unsure about getting one at times mainly because it's still just 32GB max, but then I think I'd hate to buy "old" hardware now and regret it in a couple of years.

Honestly, I'm having a hard time to decide whether or not I will upgrade from my 3GS.

One of the main appeals for me was the retina display. But then I realized, as cool as the concept is, the screen is still only 3.5". As cool as retina display sounds, I just don't think it will really show it's potential on a such a small screen.

What I really want is an iPad with a retina display! To me that is a more practical screen size for actually viewing the web and consuming media.

OH I forgot they gave the 3GS Nike+ support, ahhh I can't wait to get this new phone!

I am just going to keep my 3GS and pick up an iPad which will save me a bunch of money. It is somewhat amusing that some of the people on these forums obsessed with having the latest gadget feel everybody should share that.

I started a different thread somewhat similar to this and the responses for reasons to upgrade were juvenile and illogical at times.

I'm in the exact same position as you.

The forward-facing camera, for me, sealed the deal.

I skipped the 3GS.

Who are you to judge?

Just because you think somebody's reason does not support their decision does not make it so.

That's why I'll be upgrading! And so should you =P

Im from the UK so it all depends on pricing for me really.

If the price isn't right I'll be upgrading to the HTC Desire and then getting an iPad.

I just don't think the new features I would use as much as I think. The 720p video is an amazing addition, combined with iMovie - WOW!

But hey, who knows. I really am undecided!
