True. But if you don't see why a GPS would be handy if you were in a situation where you have no map and/or street signs, then one of the benefits of GPS is really lost on you.

I meant GPS in an iPhone or blackberry. I fully understand the benefit of GPS.

Still don't know why GPS is such a huge deal. How hard is to use a map or look at street signs?

i dont know anyone who carries a map in their car anymore. and by the time you see a sign. there might be too much traffic for you to get over to make the turn, or by the time you realize that you need to turn, you've already passed it. the gps helps see ahead.

Who said it was hard? For me, it's just plain inconvenient. Why would you want to deal with the hassle of buying and lugging around paper maps and guidebooks (which are typically out-of-date by the time they hit the stores) when you could get way more up-to-date information on a device that fits in your pocket (like the iPhone w/ Google Maps + GPS)?

A lot of cities I visit, I'm only visiting once or twice. Why spend $40+ in maps and books just to find my way around and a good place to eat?

Well then you can call the Gov's mansion and ask Palin to help you out. She'll get all mavericky and hop in her snowmobile and pick ya up. Then she'll show you where you can see Russia from her house. :)
'cept she calls 'em "snowmachines", not snowmobiles. :D

I am aware of how GPS works and the 2G does use cell towers for location.
So, whether I am within the 1000 feet on the cell towers of the 2G or the 3g triangulation, the increased accuracy is not in any practical way useful to me.
I am in Cleveland and I travel to Phila , Pitts and NY state regularly, and by the time these areas are fully covered there will be a new iPhone so I reallt think returning my 3G is the best way to go, since there are no inherent benefits to the 3g as I see it.
I am always open to suggestions so keep em coming.
Thanks again.

Sounds to me like you've already made your decision, and it makes sense based on your situation. Why frustrate yourself with all these contrary opinions. Pull the trigger and be happy!

I've used GPS on my iPhone with NO CELL SERVICE and it still found my location. The map didn't load, but I could still see the path that I created when looking up directions when I had cell service. Since GPS still worked, I could see the path I was following so I knew I was going the correct way. Just so you know, I even closed Maps, and reopened it and it still found my location without service.

I'll try it again just to make sure, but I certainly remember very well thinking "Crap, this isn't going to work without cell service and then I was surprised when it did.

Just thought that something that I read yesterday might be of some help to you. Try searching the Iphone 3g Discussions on the Apple website for "Miracle Fix" for some reason the link will not post, sorry.

Confession

I started this thread and although I am normally not as dumb as this, I must admit to a real bonehead move.

Since I had a 2G phone, after I went to ATT and bought the new 3G, I thought I was all set until I failed to get 3G service anywhere from Ohio to Philadelphia and back.

I thought the coverage was bad until one of your very helpful posters sent me to the "Miracle Fix" section on the Apple Forums.

It seems when I bought it the ATT salesman failed to turn on 3G on my phone.
I had no idea (and still dont) why that should be an option since you can't use it with 2G). Battery power when using WiFI?

Anyway, sorry for wasting your time, and I hope to redeem myself by helping out as much as I can to repay all the kind help and suggestions I received.
Please don't say, "Don't bother" all at once!

Thanks again for everything.

FWIW, the 3G iPhone works fine on 2G. Disabling 3G lets the battery last longer, so some people chose to do that.

The guy must have turned 3G OFF for you because it is ON by default. Just thought you'd like to know that. I know it's on by default because I've owned 4 iPhone 3Gs and 3G has been on from the very first boot on all of them.

That's great. I've always thought that the iPhone GPS is great for what I need, and worked great whenever I used it but I wondered what it would be like if I had no cell service. If it does work like that, that's enough for me.

3G is really worth it, and I'm soon your area will get it soon. AT&T is spending billions to expand its network.

Trust me, once you get 3G you'll be glad you kept the phone. Edge is junk.

Here is a question but in reverse. What is the big deal about the ATT Wifi annoucement? I mean why would you care about having a hotspot if you have edge or 3G? I mean you are paying for data plan for these.
