When trying to create a new project the camera option at top left is not highlight, so cannot download!

    Which version of OSX?
    Which version of iMovie?
How are you connecting your camcorder to your Mac?

    OSX Yosemite 10.10.03
    iMovie 10.0.8
Cable from USB to camera output port

Something seems to have changed since March when I last successfully downloaded a video!

The only way to download video from a miniDV camcorder to your Mac/iMovie, is by using a Firewire cable. It can't be done using USB.

Seems strange because I used the USB cable in March. Do you have any recommendation for a suitable Firewire cable please?

No, any Firewire cable will do. One end will have to be a four pin plug(to connect to the camcorder), and the other end either a six pin or nine pin, depending on the Firewire socket on your Mac. You can get six pin to nine pin adapters and also Firewire to Thunderbolt adapters if you have TB on your Mac.
