My step dad was getting all frustrated because his machine refused to allow him to send him an email.

I let him use my iBook. done in 10 seconds. :D

Did a giant hand pop out of the screen waving like "no no no.. cant send the email" ?

You could just point it to the downloaded SP2 files. It wants to update some files and because the system is already at SP2 level, it doesnt want to take older files from the SP1 CD and use those so it asks for windows with SP2 or you can just point to the SP2 files which are free to download.

hi contour,

thanks. i appreciate the suggestion and had thought of that, but i had deleted the install files way back after upgrading and didn't feel like dloading them just for the fax feature.

even though i could dload them, i thought it was nuts that i would have to :)

oh well.

It might be nuts to download them again but if you think of it, its actually the best thing for the OS. You dont want to comprimise the update level of a computer by reinstalling older system files. That would make your system...what...SP1.5 :) This is really the only way to ensure you stay up to date. I mean if you already have SP2, then any system level software that goes on has to be SP2 and not older.

Lol! T3h w1nd0w5 is teh suxxorz!:D

NOOBTACULAR! I have many of these kinds'a stories... Great one...

BTW, I think service pacska re more like 10.4.6 and 10.4.7...:)

XP Sp2 will create the i386 folder

When you install Service Pack 2 on a Windows XP machine, SP2 automatically creates a i386 folder. The i386 folder is the "core code" and drivers folders on all windows operating systems (beginning with Windows 2000).

If you have not applied Service Pack 2, you should do it soon. Service Pack 2 increases the security of the box; however, if you are running an old box, or old software, consult with the manufacturer if they are SP2 compatible.

If you do not have this folder, someone deleted it. Just go to another Windows XP machine with SP2 and burn the entire folder to a CD. Another option is to download the sp2 again. Don't run it normally, but rather with a command prompt switch (I think it's -d, but need to make sure...). That recreates a i386 folder for you.

When you update drivers on a Windows XP machine, a i386 folder is also created inside the C:/windows/system32/reinstalldriver folder. That is related to the driver rollback feature.

When all else fails, just do a search. Also remember that by default, when you setup Faxes on Windows XP, the default is send only. To receive faxes, you have to change that setting.

And last... I have no idea how any of you live without the mouse right click button!!!!! :D

thanks for the suggestions. i do appreciate them. a windoze forum suggested dloading them, burning them to a cd and trying that. in the end, my point was how crazy it was to do all this rigamarole (sp?) for stuff. macs just make it easy.

lol on the no right click comment. i wondered how I would do....easy fix...kept a regular logitech trackball for my mac :) lmao I imagine it would be easy though. mac os has tons of shortcuts with the option and apple keys...wickedly easy to get around stuff..and especially within windows. i actually go nuts that windows xp still lacks the window viewing capabilities of mac os....it kind of makes me think of how far advanced win xp is to win 95 :)
legions beyond.. :)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I'm currently in the process of re-installing Windows XP from scratch on my stepdad's laptop and it's honestly a pain in the ass. I have to re-install internal drivers (sound, display, touchpad, ethernet, graphics, and those "extra" buttons below the screen), and drivers for the wireless card. Not to mention installing and configuring anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware before I install the drivers for the wireless card. If I'm not mistaken, none of that is an issue with a Mac because the OS X install DVD comes with all the drivers, and there's no viruses and spyware. I wouldn't have been spending a lot of the past day trying to make the computer work enough to give it back to my stepdad for him to use.

Final Score:
OS X: 17
XP: -112

Is it really that hard? I just burnt a CD with SP2 on it as well as Ethernet, Wireless, Audio, chipset and video drivers.

-installed XP and rebooted
-installed SP2 and rebooted
-installed Chipset drivers and rebooted
-installed audio, lan, wireless and video drivers and rebooted

Ummm ya that did it.

As for firewall. How hard is it to go into XP security center and make sure firewall is on. As for antivirus, just download Avast or AVG which are 100% free and its not like its hard to install.

Ok..i know these types of posts happen all the time.
my story: i have 2 macs and a peecee for my business. the latter is used for the business side of things so the macs run files etc.. (video transfer business).

so i need to send a fax...and i've never set up windoze to do it. fine...i find the instructions, follow them....and it asks for winxp service pack 2 CD. I only have the original SP1 CD. so i sigh and go to microsoft's site, figuring hey, maybe i can dload something. i find more instructions...they say the same thing. I don't have the sp2 install exe on my peecee so essentially, down the proverbial creek i am.

i say, ok...i print the file into a pdf. hop onto my mac and grab the file from my peecee over the network. type in 'fax' in the help.
boom..instructions..ok... i connect my G4's internal modem to my line...follow instructions.

done.
sent..2x's to be safe.

everything worked....took about 1 minute 10 seconds, including time to find my old modem cable and connect it.

my lord microsoft sucks. why does everything have to be pulling out teeth!?!?!!
I would thank CUPS, Common UNIX Printing System for that. :)
