Have you ever shopped at an Apple store? Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've never had a Genius try to push anything on me or tell me about anything unrelated to what I said that I was there for.My thoughts exactly. People order way less stuff when doing it online. Now I'm sure apple has also considered that this will generate lines too, but it's far more likely that the reason would be so that they could be up sold on other things in the store.

My most recent purchase was particularly interesting. It was my first time going in and buying anything in a few years. I was greeted as I walked in, and they asked if I was coming in for anything in particular. I told them what I wanted. She told me where to go and indicated that another Genius would help me; she then contacted the Genius with their radios and told him what I needed. He had already taken it off of the shelf and was holding it out for me by the time I got to him. He asked if that would be all, rang it up using their mobile checkout system, bagged the item for me, and I was out. There was no time for me to look over other products on the shelves, no chatter about buying other products. The store wasn't particularly busy, either, so it's not the case that they were trying to move me along. It was a smooth in-and-out experience.
Apple's company mantra is that everything is about the user experience. Honestly, that was the best in-store experience I've ever had. It was quick, it was convenient, and there was no nagging to buy other products.
TL;DR: my experience challenges the assertion that Apple views customers in a store as an opportunity to up-sell or sell more items.
