the device you're describing will cost like 2-3k, that'd be insane! I think what makes sense for Apple is to keep the dgpu option OR redesign the 15" so it can put that space vacated by the dgpu to good use. since the logic board is already designed and apple rarely changes logic board design language within a given design structure, it woudln't make any sense for apple to not source that option if it can make more money off of it.

How would it cost 2-3k for a display? A whole 27" iMac with a dgpu and a 3.2Ghz i5 is $1799.

It won't, unless you can break the laws of physics.

That's overly dramatic. It's not a law of physics that a dGPU will never be in a 13" MBP, it is just constrained right now by battery life and heat. There will also be a point one day where dGPUs run cool enough to put them in a 13" computer (it's already being done). Does that break the laws of physics?

Keep in mind that the Xbox One doesn't have to run an OS and other processes in the background, but an rMBP has to.

True! I just hope that one day the MBPr matches the Xbox One in terms of gaming.

I dream of having an all in one device- laptop, Xbox One, and TV all in one.

We can already have laptop and TV as I know it's possible to watch TV on the MBPr.

Now all we need is to make it as good as an Xbox One in terms of gaming then I'll be happiest man in the world.

Someone had said it's probably because of cost issues. That's my guess too.

There won't be a price tier like their is now. You'll have 13" MBPr starting at higher prices than base 15" and that's just not Apple-like.

The laws of thermodynamics are physics laws too. So unless you can break them as well...

Mate, if that happens in the next 5 years, I'll eat my hat.

Gaming requirements are always on the rise, so I doubt it's likely to happen.

You're probably going to need a dedicated gaming laptop instead :)

Or either, if you've got a bucketload of cash, you can buy a Sonnet IIID Thunderbolt enclosure, put a GTX 780 Ti in it, connect it to the rMBP as an eGPU setup and start playing.

Those weigh too much! Might as well get a mac pro haha!

Are PC makers breaking the laws of physics?

Nope, they aren't, because PC laptops with a decent gaming card are huge and bulky.

Meanwhile, 13" and 14" PC laptops with dGPUs are never as thin as that of a 13" rMBP. So they aren't breaking the laws of physics, but those laptops are bulky, thick and ugly.

Turns out the MBPr 15" with dGPU is pretty close!

Were you the bloke that once posted a thread that went along the lines of "Why people say that you need a dGPU for gaming?" and you also said that your Iris could play COD at max settings smoothly?

Try playing Battlefield 4 at max settings on your Iris, you won't get anything more than single-digit FPS :)

The 14" Razer PC laptop is thinner than a 13" rMBP (which features a 3200 x 1800 IGZO display with 2.2 ghz i7 Quad Core and 870m GPU.)

And design wise it looks like a black Macbook Pro.

I stand corrected...but the deal breaker is that it doesn't run OS X (sure, I could Hackintosh it, but that'd be a violation of the SLAs and driver support isn't guaranteed between updates).

They don't make it because they don't think it would sell en mass. If you don't want OS X, you can get a 14" that's about as thin as the 13" rMBP, with the specs you want.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I'm sick of people around here saying it's impossible - it's not impossible, just not what Apple chooses to do.

True. It's a great machine for gaming no doubt. But it can run extremely hot when gaming and that'd be really uncomfortable (I've gamed on a PC laptop before I bought my MacBook) and the Razer Blade has dismal battery life (less than 5 hours according to the Verge)

Apple don't make compromises when it comes to battery life and it shows. I'm looking to get a revised 13" rMBP this year, trading my beast for something more mobile and still capable. And I'd do anything for a retina screen. :p
