I want to get an iPad Pro to replace my aging 2012 MacBook Air and saw the recent rumors about the Pro having an OLED display in late 2021. This doesn't make sense - why release a device with mini-LED and then another with OLED later in the same year? Why bother with mini-LED at all and not just go straight to OLED (surprised it's not OLED already in 2020)?

OLED has burning issues and other things. MiniLED uses LED panels and LCD. Together they can bring the benefits of OLED and avoiding the burning issue with a lower price tag.
OLED seems to be used just fine on the iPhone and Apple Watch, why would it be different for the iPad?
Cuz the screen is bigger. That’s because the OLED is not very efficient , especially with whites,and not heat resistant like the LCD. Which I mentioned before will cause burns. Plus, we are talking about 12.9 inch.
