Why won't the next iPhone be called the 'iPhone 5'?

I keep reading on these forums that the next iPhone will not be called the iPhone 5... but I don't understand the reasoning. Could someone please explain it to me?

i'm betting it will be some kind of special dedicated version to jobs like they did with the red ipod way back when

Because the next iPhone will be the 6th version of the device:

1 - original iPhone
2 - iPhone 3G
3 - iPhone 3GS
4 - iPhone 4
5 - iPhone 4S
6 - IPhone ???

The sad thing is that we will have to endure another year of bickering about the naming convention rather than speculating on the specs/features.

Had Apple called the 4s model "5", we could say that we are back on track to have a linear naming convention from this point forward. Since they went with an "s" release, the conversation will now center around if they name it "5" to be consistent with the past or if they name it in accordance with generation.

It is going to be another long year...
 
They are simply going to call it "STEVE" oh look that has five letters, I wonder what that means.
 
These forums are not an authoritative source of anything -- in fact, this very statement is not authoritative regarding its very subject. 😉

In all seriousness, some folks believe the iPhone naming convention has everything to do with its generation. Of the five generations of iPhones, only one of them has been named precisely after its generation -- iPhone 4. Even the first iPhone was simply called iPhone, not iPhone One.

The naming convention seems to have more to do with distinguishing the overall design of the device:

iPhone
iPhone 3G = new radio, new design, new name
iPhone 3GS = faster guts, same design, just append an S
iPhone 4 = new everything, new name -- and happens to be 4th generation
iPhone 4S = faster guts, (mostly) same design, just append an S
iPhone 5 = new everything, new name -- but 6th generation

Doesn't make much sense to call it anything other than iPhone 5 unless one is in the name must match the generation camp.
 
I don't know why they don't just call the iPhone, "iPhone." I mean, it gets so complicated and confusing each year when they tack on an extra letter to the name.

They don't do it with iPods or Macs, so why iPhones?
 
If it's not already obvious that Apple is not naming the phone based on generation, your observation skills are weak.

Otherwise we'd all be pre-ordering an iPhone 5 right now.
