Why won't these clouds go away? They have been here in this location for months. I have looked in these folders online in iCloud through Safari and it doesn't look like anything under these folders is missing.

Yeah, as Robert says; The point of the cloud icon is to let you know that the file is not currently present on your machine locally, so if you’re not connected to the internet you can’t access it

But it says 'uploading' or 'waiting to upload' when I mouse hover. And I don't have optimize storage on for this machine, so all originals should be present. Weird thing is that I can see in iCloud through a web browser that the files have already uploaded.

So, I don't think you guys are correct in this case.

Hm. I do see the “Uploading” text in the screenshot. Was that there before, or did I just not look? Haha

Could you try turning off wi-fi and disconnecting any connected ethernet cables and see if the files are accessible locally without network? Just for curiosity’s sake

The files in these folders are present without internet connection. In fact, the cloud icons are only on folders, not on any files in the folders. It seems like a glitch.

The cloud looks different to the cloud icon Robert and I were talking about though; See below

Could what you're seeing be related to another cloud service like Google Drive or Dropbox or something?

"Uploading" would imply it's sending it to the Cloud from your machine.
The icon casperes1996 shows is to download from the cloud to your machine.

So, for your issue I would say that either the folder is huge and hasn't been able to upload to the cloud fully yet or there's a shortage of space on the cloud side or some other connectivity issue. Or it could be a good old fashioned bug!

This thread started in 2021, but I have the same problem on Sonoma in August of 2024. Does anyone have a definitive interpretation of the situation? Is the icon just an error that can be ignored? I get this problem intermittently. Like the OP, a folder will have the icon, but none of the files within it do.

Same here in November2024 ,intel iMac2020/Ventura. Still these stupid cloud icons while the files are already downloaded. Also the icon drive seems to try download constantly (the circle).
You found a fix?

I do have some suggestions here! I don't know how to make the uploading icons go away, but I have noticed that they seem to have happened less frequently lately. Further, I haven't seen them since I upgraded to Sequoia the other day.

I like to have all of my files on all of my devices, so for me, the concern with the uploading icon is that the file in question isn't in the cloud or on other device. To allay this concern, you can log into the web interface for iCloud and see if the file is actually there. Likewise, you can manually check to see if the file is on your other devices. For me, these uploading icons come up randomly, so checking resolves the concern. Of course, this is not ideal.

If iCloud is stuck on a file, you can try moving it out of iCloud, renaming it slightly, and moving it back into iCloud. This often fixes things Another possibility is just to create a empty folder in iCloud, whch forces iCloud to refresh. You can also go to Terminal and enter the comment "killall bird", which restarts the icloud synching services. In truth, this has never helped me, but lots of other people say it helps.

Finally, you can try the Cirrus utility, which is a free iCloud utility from a website called the Electric Light Company. You can get it at https://eclecticlight.co/cirrus-bailiff/. When my iCloud account was stuck and nothing else would fix it, running the test upload and clean up test from the Window menu immediately fixed the problem.

I hope that this helps!
