Why would anyone think they'll name it 4S?

It's like something happens ONCE in history and they think it will happen every time.

Didn't they name the second iPhone iPhone 3G because it added 3G? in other words they didn't think to go by generation they decided to add a name that described a new feature right?

And then 3Gs (cuz they couldn't name it iphone 2 or iphone 4 obviously) with the s meaning speed?

Well why would they name iphone 5 the iphone 4S? That doesn't make sense. There is no such thing as "4S" and they can't name it 4G either

People who expect a simple spec bump call it a 4S while people who expect a complete redesign call it a 5.

imo they gave iPhone 3GS its name because iPhone 3 sounded too confusing and might conflict with 3G with a lot of people. iPhone 4 doesn't conflict anything (other than fool some into thinking they have 4G!).

I get why some people might think the next phone will be called 4S, but what I don't get is why they would think the phone after "4S" is called iPhone 5.

I believe in two possibilities, either:

    iPhone 4
    iPhone 5
    iPhone 6

    or:

    iPhone 4
    iPhone 4S
    iPhone 6

    but NOT:

    iPhone 4
    iPhone 4S
    iPhone 5

Seems like Apple would just call it iPhone 5 since people think oh new number new iPhone.. regardless of new features.

Yeah, I think that could attract more sales from casuals who might not bother upgrading if it's named 4S.

Why downplay the release and cost yourself sales, just call it 5 IMO.

I only agree with your first sentence and that's because people have this stupid mentality:

"Omg theres an iPod nano SO THERE'S GONNA BE AN IPHONE NANO!! SO LET'S MAKE A MILLION THREADS ON A PHONE THAT DOESNT MAKE SENSE AND WILL NEVER EXIST"

However.. Phone 4S is likely if it's a speed bump and looks identical to the iPhone 4 (ala.. iPhone 3G > iPhone 3GS)

It seems to me like apple wants to get 2 years out of a design. That way it gives them extra time for a new design. Imagine having to design a new apple every year. Once they find that right design like the unibody, i would bet it will be a every two year design with spec bump.

With them calling the current model a '4', why wouldn't they call the next one a '5'?

My thinking is it will only be a spec bump, but Apple will call it a '5' either way. Partly to make it seem like a bigger thing than it really is, but also to jive with iOS5. No brainer, really.

Uhh... more than likely because it wasn't the 4th iPhone to have been released.

    There have been
    iphone -------------1 2007
    iphone 3G----------2 2008
    iphone 3GS--------3 2009
    iphone 4-----------4 2010

The next iPhone will be called an iPhone 5... Theirs no doubt in my mind.. The only reason the 3GS was called that was so that they can get the numbering system back in order. Now that they have, the next iPhone will b the iPhone 5... Only way they won't call it the 5 is if it adds 4G.. If it adds 4G they may call it that but 4G is such a big feature it deserves a whole number bump by itself. Therefore iPhone 5 comes again lol

As long as it is significantly better then the current 4, i don't care the name\number it is given.

Since it is suspected taht the 6th gen iPhone ill have 4G technology, if they want to name it the iPhone4G, it only makes sense to make the 5th gen a 4S since going iPhone5 to iPhone4G makes it sound like a downgrade.

No one really has any information on whether they want to stick with numbering by generation (which they've done once) or using features to name them(also done once), so both sides of the argument are equally speculative.

One release does not a pattern make. Going by history, 4S make sense, especially if it's not a complete redesign, since it follow's Apple's historic naming conventions. iPhone 5 makes sense since it establishes a new pattern, and fits nicely with iOS 5.

The point is, there's an equally valid argument to be made for it going either way. We won't know until the fall which one Apple follows (though personally, I'm guessing iPhone 5, for a lot of reasons).

    Your original statement was.
"When has the number corresponded to which one they released?"

And the answer to that is:
since iPhone 4, thats when the corresponding release and the corresponding number matched

All true and I am not even debating what it will or will not be called.
Just stating an answer to question.

I personally don't care what they call it, as long as I get to call one of them mine.
