Thinner and slower.

A lot of people like thinner laptops you know.

the rMBP is almost as thin as the air. i was comparing my pro to a kid in my classes air and the difference was almost unnoticeable. but with the 11 inch it would be a different story.

What advantage would an iOS / OSX merger bring? They keep denying they have plans to do so, yet so many people think it will happen next year.

If they did merge them, they might power the next MBA with an ARM processor (and then your ability to run Parallels would disappear). That would be my worst nightmare for a new MBA.

Actual advantages? I don't know if there are any. My point is I like the idea of a mobile app space in conjunction with a full powered desktop experience. CHOICE is key here because if there was choice, I could choose to run both while you, (based on your stance) could choose not to be bothered with it at all. Why would a merger of iOS and osx mean arm processors? Windows 8 runs on every new PC from amd to the core series. I like running iOS like apps on my Mac (think full screen mode) but with deeper integration with my ipad and iPhone. I think of it like a buissness mixed with pleasure environment. For example, running windows 8.1 in paralles enables me to download apps to the modern ui and I like the weather app and the espn app. It's a cool emmersive experience.

I have no problem with iOS apps running on my OSX MBA as long as it is an x86 procedure.

You would probably have to have an OSX display that incorporates a multi-touch input. I doubt I'd ever use it but it could be done.

I just don't want a hybrid device if 1) it requires the use of an ARM processor, or 2) it turns the MBA in a tablet/laptop combo with a detachable keyboard.

This exact question is why I think the rumor about a 12" (11.88") Air is possible. If they make a single 12" Air with retina display, and drop the 11 & 13 model Airs, then this makes sense.

12" Air - retina
13" Pro - retina
15" Pro - retina

The biggest difference between the Air and the Pro will be size and power (as stated in an earlier post) to keep it lighter and with better battery time. I do wonder about price, though.

And as they always do, I believe, they will keep the 11" $999 model - non-retina - for at least a year so they can offer the "cheap" solution. Like they did with the non-retina MacBook Pro.

Admittedly, I will miss the 11" model as that is, for me, the sweet spot when it comes to perfectly sized laptops to get day-to-day average business stuff (and writing) done. Though, I am a computer nerd and an Apple fan, so I will want the new Air I am sure. Even if it will be bigger.

the better question is how could apple not do this?/

the air is facing some stiff competition finally from asus and samsung

it also sounds right to me if Apple drop both 11 and 13 size for only one size for the Air
13'' Macbook Air just facing against another great Apple laptop: MBP Retina 13
this is ridiculous and absolute none-sense in term of commercial thing
notice how many people here made request about choosing either 13 MBA / MBP
i know 13.3'' like mostly fits more comfortable than 11''
11'' is maybe too tiny, i recognize, i love it, perfect mobility stuff but if it can be little bit larger, i ll be happy too
all my former laptop went from 11'' and 12'', trust me you can barely see any difference size, it feels pretty same but you actually got larger screen overall
2 inches larger and you definitely notice the size difference (in comparison 11 and 13 models)
obviously it wont be the case with 12'' Air

Again rumors about the release of a 13 inch Retina Air in 2014. But why would Apple release a Retina Macbook Air? They already have a 13 inch Retina right? Don't see what is the advantage of a Retina Air over a Retina Pro...

They will eventually, can't say when though.

You do have to remember that these are only rumors, no concrete evidence on this.

Yes. I try not to get my hopes up. Last year I was so disappointed when they didn't add a retina display to the 11" MBA. I would have spent $2K (probably $3K even) for a new MBA if they had even improved the display in any way.

This year it just seems like it must a sure thing.

+1 this is what I was talking about earlier. Options are great for consumers. Just like you can tweak windows 8.1 to run without the modern ui element, I would expect apple to also include that option if and when they introduce touch into their laptop lines.

Not always. There are always opportunity costs involved. The problem here is when people are not getting more of what they want, but instead being saddled with more issues that they need to contend with.

For one, trying to merge the two simply diverts resources away, resources which could be reserved for more important and relevant projects (and Apple seems taxed enough as is).

2nd, you open a can of worms for developers who may try to do funny things. Ideally, you want the touchscreen and touch-UI to be an integral part of the user experience, not something that's bolted on as an afterthought and won't get used often or at all.

So yeah, if it's a crappy option I don't really care for, I won't even bother trying. Sometimes, fewer, better options are better than several, crappier ones.
