If there was insurance, don't they "force" the phone top be reported as "stolen" (blacklisted) so that no one can later activate it?

Maybe. And maybe not.

If anyone really cares, throw your phone out the car window and proceed with the rest of the steps to find out.

I just scanned this thread. But, OP called and talked to someone. They would have seen the number if not blocked on lost iphone. All seems weird to me----

That's because this is the dumbest troll thread ever. Are children in the US on holiday currently?

Why not just turn it over to the local police? If I lost my phone, the police station would be the first place to look for it.

I already did. Maybe it will have a happy ending. I don't know but it's beyond my control at this point. Personally, though, if I lost my iPad the last place I would look would be the police station. Actually, I'd probably go to where I lost it and then after that track it/trigger lost mode. I would go to the cops eventually but it would be down the list (to file a report, etc.).

And yes, this whole situation is odd. This is the first lost iDevice I've ever found. Honestly, I was surprised to find it (and that it worked) and even more surprised when the search for its owner came up short...especially when the owner (or no one else) called the phone! I don't own an iPhone but if I did I would have least tried that option. Or turned on lost mode. Neither one happened. Maybe, as someone pointed out, they moved on to another phone. Who knows?

I guess it is what it is. Life is strange.

Moral of the story: if you don't have 'find my iphone' enabled (and I guess most do) then it might be a good idea to turn it on.

Peace.

So, did you do this already:

Take SIM card out. Locate name of the provider on the SIM card. Call provider. Provider can find the owner by a number printed on the SIM card. Also when SIM card was active you could put it in different phone and call 611.

It seems like a logical and simple solution to me and it seems you haven't done this yet. Why not?

I did. As mentioned, I tried everything (well, most everything - admittedly, I didn't think of moving the SIM card to my own phone as the above poster stated. Hindsight. Gotta love it).

The T-Mobile rep wanted me to take the phone in to a store at first but I then explained that I was over an hour away from the nearest T-Mobile store (I live in a rural area). I was then passed to another person who looked up the account. Fortunately, they had a contact point for the owner. I then gave her one of my emails along with my cell number and asked if she could pass it along. As of today the owner hasn't responded. At least I can tell them where to go to pick the phone up, so...good thing. Kinda frustrating, though.

Amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if the Coen brothers contact you soon as this has a season of "Fargo" based on it all over it. Do you live in Minnesota?

Well, this is interesting...

I received a message from the guy that I had originally texted when I found the phone. At any rate, he was able to get in contact with the owner and I spoke with them. They'll have to get it from the cops but...problem solved!

The interesting part was that they live about three hours away. When I told them the phone was ok and at the local PD the dad was pretty happy (I would be) and then he goes 'well, I guess I should have checked there, too.'

The ironic part was that the guy I originally contacted had a phone number instead of a name for his iMessage. Otherwise I highly doubt they would have recovered the phone.

So...good day.
