Apple refreshed the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max models in March 2026, but depending on your needs and interests, you might want to skip this generation because there's something better in the works.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models have faster chips, but the same design that Apple has used since 2021. An updated design with new display technology and faster performance is coming in late 2026 or early 2027.

OLED Touchscreen Display

The next MacBook Pro that comes out will be the first with an OLED display, according to rumors. iPhones have used OLED for years, and Apple launched a larger-screened OLED device with the M4 iPad Pro in 2024.

OLED has benefits over the mini-LED display in current MacBook Pro models. Pixels can be lit individually for deeper blacks, brighter colors, and no bloom from surrounding pixels. There can be power savings when compared to mini-LED displays, response times are quicker, and viewing angles are better. OLED brightness can be an issue compared to LEDs, but as OLED technology has improved, so has brightness. The combination of true black and vivid color is ideal for HDR content.

Along with OLED, the next MacBook Pro is expected to have touchscreen capabilities.

Apple said repeatedly that the Mac wouldn't get a touchscreen, but Apple's position has shifted. Multiple rumors suggest that touch capabilities are coming, making the Mac more like an iPad. Touch-based controls will be available alongside traditional mouse and keyboard input options.

Design Update

Some rumors suggest the OLED MacBook Pro will be thinner, and since Apple hasn't updated the MacBook Pro design since 2021 and this is a major technology shift, some kind of design refresh is likely. Sizes will stay the same, and Apple isn't removing the keyboard or trackpad.

Instead of a notch, the OLED MacBook Pro is expected to have a Dynamic Island that takes up less screen space. The Dynamic Island will be interactive, and it will contextually expand based on the app or Mac feature in use.

2nm Chip

The OLED MacBook Pro models will be the first to use Apple's 2-nanometer chip technology that's supposed to be coming in the M6-series chips.

The change in node size is expected to bring faster speeds with reduced power consumption and higher transistor density. Performance per watt will improve, and the 2nm chips will use GAA nanosheet transistors instead of FinFET. TSMC says the new transistor technology will bring improved performance and lower power consumption.

Cellular Connectivity

There have been rumors that 5G could come to Macs, and if that's Apple's plan, it would make a lot of sense to offer it in the OLED MacBook Pro.

Ultra Branding

OLED touch displays will be limited to the highest-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models because of the cost, and Apple might even use new "Ultra" branding.

It's possible the OLED M6 model will be sold alongside the existing M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max models rather than replacing them, and if that's the case, we're likely looking at a serious price increase. Apple could also refresh the entire line with M6 chip variants, reserving the OLED display for the most expensive models.

If you don't care about OLED display technology or a touchscreen and want something lower-cost, you're probably not going to want to hold off on purchasing.

First-Generation Tech

Some of Apple's first-generation Macs can have more problems than expected, which was the case with the 2016 transition to the butterfly keyboard.

If you don't want to get AppleCare+ and are concerned about first-generation problems, the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models are a safer bet.

Launch Date

The OLED MacBook Pro could come as soon as late 2026, but it's looking more like Apple will hold it until early 2027. Apple is facing chip shortages that will require it to hold the MacBook Pro for longer to build up stock.

Unless the screen can fully detach from the keyboard and become a tablet, I don't see the point at all for a touchscreen on a laptop. Just seems annoying. But i guess Apple wants to take baby steps towards a fully detachable ipad/macbook hybrid.

It's OK - I did just buy a loaded M5 Max Pro MacBook Pro. 128GB RAM 8TB SSD.

When the new one comes out I'll buy it too.

More machines is handy for playing with AI installs.

Did you have the M4 Max in similar config? Interested in specific performance increase you're seeing with specific workloads. I'm doing research work and keep hitting walls and with the studio delayed I'm stymied.

Of course. I was talking about a hybrid device that can run both macOS AND iPadOS. That seems to be the dream of macbook users who want a hybrid device. Me personally? I ditched my macbook back in 2018 for an iPad Pro and i haven't looked back. As an artist, for me, the iPad Pro is the best device Apple has ever made. I don't own a laptop or a computer anymore. I do everything on my iPad and will never buy another laptop again.

I’m debating whether to get one right this second. Micro Center has a 16" M5 Max with 64GB and 2TB for $4200 (10% off $4600) and the one by me does half sales tax. I've been waiting to get a Mac Mini or Studio to upgrade my M1Pro Macbook Pro but with the delays and price increases, this seems like the best deal I'll see for a while.

The PCs I've been watching at Micro Center have all gone up by $1000. And as someone else commented, I don't want a Macbook with a touchscreen, I actually want an iPad that can run Mac software and a full file system.

I guess I just talked myself into getting it!

I've waited 20 years to buy a MacBook Pro (new*), I can wait a few more months!

The only MacBook Pros I've ever owned were already 10+ years old when I got them. 😉

I've never seen a need for a touch screen on a laptop. But I can't begin to tell you the number of times, when I want to show a web page to a friend or relative, that they instinctively try to swipe the screen instead of the trackpad to scroll the page.

I assume this is force of habit from phones and tablets. And I know that extended use in that orientation leads to sore wrists. But there are people who claim they want this. So why not sell them what they want? As long as I'm not forced to pay extra for the feature, i really don't care.

No, I upgraded from my 2018 M1 MacBook Pro. ALSO loaded with 8TB SSD!

I thought THAT one was pricey. The new one all these years later was $12K CAD. (Canadian Dollars).

Anyways, the new one I put some AI stuff on it and decided I want to erase it and remove my Apple ID before doing like Neo Claw etc. So I am using the M1 and it's still fine. Still has super long battery.

My workloads in real life are not heavy, except maybe Astrophotography these days.

I upgraded because I thought now was a good time AND because I heard so much about people doing AI installs on Mac mini and Mac Studios.

I'm not the best guy to ask about horsepower really.

Yep, it will be at least a 8 month wait, and some/many of the features in the article may not even be in the new macbook. Between being a new model, and the current RAM and SSD prices, how much will it cost?

I didn't wait. I just got a M5 Pro MacBook Pro. I love it.
Same here. My last MBP had the infamous Butterfly keyboard (and yes, it failed). So I will stick with the tried-and-tested hardware from now on, thanks. No interest in a touchscreen Mac, either. Call me when they can read hand gestures, though! 😉

I am so excited. I am waiting until fall or March 2027. ☺️ If rumors are true, I will be pre-ordering MacBook pro M6 with touch screen. I am using a 8 year old Hp Spectre 4k touch screen and love touch screen. Can't wait for my first macOS with touch screen.💖💖

why u need a touchscreen for Mac? u buying it wrong.

again, I think there's something odd about this. the delay tells me something.

it just doesn't make sense to touch laptops. it failed miserably on PCS.
