Why You Shouldn't Buy the Next MacBook Pro

"All day battery life" for something that lasts all day under normal use isnt spin. Apple has been saying that since the M1 and no one has really pushed back against it.

Considering I can still do a full 9 to 5 working in AutoCAD on battery on my almost 2 year old M3 Pro, and still have 25-35% charge remaining, and that’s a pretty legit claim. Spin not needed.

There are definite benefits with touch screens. But it's certainly not for everyone.

Meanwhile, I have other things to do than to maximally optimize my hand movement. I am not always in 100% typing mode. Sometimes a quick touch is simpler in either action or concept or both.

Don't make the mistake of assuming that anyone intends touch to be the only way you interact with your device. This is not a handheld. You already use a mix of interaction modes with the keyboard and a mouse. Remember when mice were new and people claimed that mice were stupid because they were more efficient if their fingers never left the keyboard? Touch becomes just one more mode that will make sense sometimes and other modes at other times. You, personally, may avoid it and that's OK. Other people use their devices differently.

I used to be excited about tech, and the future possibilities, but now I just see chatbots being shoved in everywhere without regard for utility, and stalker glasses obliterating whatever chance for a skerrick of privacy we have left, and whatnot, and I’ve become a bit skeptical.

A touchscreen on a laptop is terrible, unless it folds "backwards" into a tablet format. I had a very early touchscreen laptop (it was a Fujitsu I think, can't remember the model name, it was around 2002). Reaching up and out to touch the screen was very awkward and uncomfortable.

Touchscreens work great on handhelds. Not on something that sits on a desk or table with a vertical screen orientation.

Surely I'd be using an Applepencil-like device with both hands off the keyboard and mouse anyway?
If this touch feature doesn't allow that and just allows selections and scrolling, then it won't be all that interesting for me.
But I can tell you for most people (pros and, probably enthusiasts), using wacom or its equivalent is faster for a lot of things. But who knows what Apple's planning. Interested either way.

Nerd cred? I'm pretty cynical about LTT, they always seem to have their own narrative to push. I expect it's just a bit of low-hanging fruit for them to whinge about Apple over. They enjoy doing that.

You make a lot of assumptions, but I would hope that Apple has ergonomics in mind for this new design if they really are adding touch. If Adobe had created a full version of its suites on iPad rather than half-hearted ones, I'd be using iPads exclusively for creative work. Maybe this new MacBook will be the solution? One can hope.
As for LTT, not interested and don't care what a PC tech channel says.

To summarize most posts in other threads about these rumors:

Touchscreen - do not want.
OLED - who cares.
Cellular - won't use it.
2nm Chips - marginal performance improvement, the M1 is still fine for most people.

And then there are the people who just think everything apple does is magical and wonderful, who use an iPhone Air and bought a Vision Pro. To them, all of these features are apparently a necessity and apple will do them better than anyone else.

I'm still running the first gem touchbar MBP and that OLED strip has been ****ed for years now. I never use it so there is no point in having it fixed. But I fully support staying away from all of Apple's first gen experiments like that OLED touchscreen.

The iPad Pro is their first-gen touchscreen tandem OLED and that screen is really nice, the laptop will be their second-gen.

Both my MicroLED iPad and MBP have also been great so I'm glad I didn't stay away from them when they launched.

So, actually the M5 pro/max is the one to get if you are serious in not becoming an Apple guinea pig and need to survive until at least M7. I don’t trust OLED yet as a laptop screen, and please, no fingers on my nano coated screen, thank you. Just told my pretty beefed up M4 Max it’s here to stay for a couple of years, scheduled for replacement with M7 Max in 2028at the earliest.

I don't get it. Are you referring to the long-ago rumored PowerBook G5 that would have been a space heater, weighed 8 lbs, had a 3-hour battery life, and fans that sounded like a jet engine?

I also believe that the best thing to do right now is to wait for the next generation of MacBook Pro. I see in the comments that there are many anxious people trying to justify a very limited and irrational decision, such as investing thousands of dollars in the MacBook Pro M5, which will already be outdated (2021 technologies), already at the time of availability.


The next generation of MacBooks Pro will be the best of all time! The M5 will plummet in value in the used market very quickly.

The article was comparing the current M5 MBP to a hypothetical M6/M6Pro MBP coming either this fall or Q1 2027. That version may include a redesign and an OLED screen. It may also have a price increase.

The March release should be additional MBPs with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

If you need one now and want to upgrade your employee (the M1 is a good choice for them), you could get either the current M5 or wait a couple of weeks for M5 Pro if you need some extra performance.

The M6+OLED is a longer and less certain timeframe. You may or may not like the new version and it may be more expensive. Don't take this article's premise as absolute truth. It was written, in part, as a controversial take to generate clicks. It may or may not align with your needs.

There’s nothing wrong with the current M5 MBPs. If the work you do fits within the 10 CPUs, 10 GPUs, and up to 32 GB RAM, it will be a long time before it runs out of steam.
