Most people probably already pay a subscription fee for their cable modem / wifi router combo Comcast, etc. At least this would be a better alternative.

Even though I own my own equipment one advantage of renting a combo gateway from your ISP is if you have any trouble they will come change it out for you for free. I doubt this company is going to give you a new one if it breaks. I still think renting is the wrong way to go, but at least if they rent it to you they take care of it.

Oh yay. Just like app devs, now hardware manufacturers are trying to pry monthly cash from our hands for core product functionality. I say, boycott these people.

Not buying or boycotting such products will soon have an effect. Ridiculous idea to introduce a subscription.

Pretty soon, the trend to this financial model will be so expensive that customers will have to start reducing the number of products, that they use. That includes hardware, software, magazines etc. Only so much disposable income at the end of each month.
