After upgrading to iOS 14.1, the Wi-Fi on my iPhone Xs seems to be permanently disabled. I cannot toggle Wi-Fi settings to "on" and if I push the Wi-Fi icon on the screen on the right, it turns blue for a few seconds and reverts to the Wi-Fi symbol with a slash through it:

I have:
  • restarted
  • removed all VPN settings & software
  • reset network settings
  • re-installed iOS while connected to my Mac.
  • used DFU mode to completely reset the phone
After the DFU reset, I was able to configure the initial Wi-Fi as normal, but then I re-installed from backup and the problem persisted.

Any idea what's going on here? I figure I have three choices:
  • hope it fixes itself
  • hope the next update fixes it
  • reinitialize the phone and start from scratch (no resotre from backup)

Any other ideas?

hope it fixes itself
> maybe try a couple of restarts?

hope the next update fixes it
> iOS 14.2 is still on beta. No official date yet (as what I know). Updates can only be done over wifi...soo...

reinitialize the phone and start from scratch (no resotre from backup)
> What it will cost?

I suggest to contact Apple since my comments somehow did not help...

I must've restarted it about 50 times when trying to get into DFU mode before I realized that you must use a USB2/lightning cable to connect the phone to the Mac.

Speaking of which, you can update while connected to a Mac or PC, no Wi-Fi required.

As far as cost, just time and aggravation.

After I installed 14.2 and then restarted with Airplane mode enabled and then turned off Airplane mode after the reboot, we seem to be back to normal.

Despite seeming to fix this back in November, the problem resurfaced every time I restarted the phone.

I just fixed this with a program called "Decipher Backup Repair". It worked this way:
1) make backup
2) use Decipher Backup Repair to remove the network settings from the backup
3) restore phone from the altered backup

Good job finding a solution.

To me, this did indicate something to do with your backed up data was the problem.

Unfortunately, dealing with corrupted files in iOS and some backup formats can be very difficult. But again, good job finding out how.
