I'm moving to Brooklyn tonight and need to know how to find a wireless signal with my iMac airport like so many of my laptop buddies can do anywhere they go. Is it as simple as plugging it in and searching for a signal? since I will not be jacked in to a cable modem or anything, it would be like using Wi-Fi, I would assume at least. any suggestions/advice?????

Yeah, theft is that simple assuming it's not a public Wifi Spot.

Well if there are wireless networks around then yes, it's that simple. Just don't come crying when you get busted for jacking someones wireless connection.

Thanks OP for asking that Q. It's something I wanted to know also as I'm getting an iMac as soon as I can afford to and my phone line is situated in a strange place in my house meaning all my computers are on Wifi.
Thanks also to tiredhorses for answering :)

    Both good points.

OP, if you'd asked about the legality of this; I would have given the same answer as they did.

I don't condone it, but it is that simple.

    Thanks Officer MacSmartyPants!!

I was going to drop a bunch of legalese into my post, but figured it would sound all erudite and stuff. Thanks for caring about any potential criminality in my quest to check my emails from my grandmothers attic. Being a pirate is going to be fun. Question: do i go with an eye patch or the parrot?

PS. Thanks for the advice. really.:p

Haha. It's still theft if you don't ask her! ;)

If you can afford it (I mean, come on, you're saving money by using your grandmother's internet connection), I'd take both the eye patch and the parrot.

Technically, it is only theft if the wireless signal is password protected and you hack into it. It isn't theft if the wireless signal isn't password protected and you use. Crazy but true :D

You know there was a guy in Florida with a laptop who got convicted of a 3rd degree felony for using someone's WIFI signal. The idiot was parked in front of the guys house! Geez. With so many places offering free WIFI now, there really is no need to pay for internet - if you have a laptop. iMac is another story you can't carry it around.

But in most large towns and apt complexes, there are so many WIFI connections you never know which one will be using. You could auto connect to your neighbors signal and never know it. If you want to keep outsiders outside of your network, set up a password requirement on the router.
