Wide gray band on screen

I'm sure this must be a hardware defect but has anyone seen this before? Just turned up on my wife's month old iPad.

Has it been knocked hard against something or dropped?

You might want to make an appointment with an Apple Genius. Usually they're pretty good about exchanges for faulty units.
