I thought for sure I had gotten hacked when it said my password or ID were incorrect and I knew it was.
I worked in IT for many years and we had web apps. When we ran into server or app issues the first thing we did was put up a notice. Apple needs to change their messages. If their servers are down or just can't be reached the message SHOULD NOT READ that you ID or password is incorrect. It should say something about the servers being busy, try again later.
I know this goes against "everything Apple" but if they want to play in the cloud they need to change their "no statement at any cost" attitude. We all know these things happen. It would be nice to know it's not just our specific account without having to go to a forum to find out.
