I just ordered a refurbished 13" MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2014 with 16GB RAM and 512GB flashdrive) to replace my iPad 3.

I've become disenchanted with my iPad from a productivity standpoint. It's a great toy for content consumption, but it sucks as a tool for my business; and I want something for both.

I'm a designer and illustrator. My wife and I run a small studio business from our home. My primary computer is a Mac Pro (a venerable 3,1). That's where I do 100% of my work.

The thing is, occasionally working on the MP is overkill, especially if I'm writing, doing emails, or light photo editing. It would also be nice to be able to work in a different location once in a while (but that Mac Pro is so darn heavy!). Most of that would be fine on a iPad, except that I use software that isn't available on the iPad, so I can't switch between IOS and OSX.

For instance, I prefer Postbox as a mail client. Not available on the iPad.

I write with Mellel and BBEdit. Neither are currently available on the iPad.

I do photo editing in Photoshop and Lightroom. Not interested in doing this on an iPad.

I could go on but hopefully you get the gist.

So I'm getting this MBPr, and it will replace my iPad for entertainment and content consumption. But it will ALSO serve as a mobile way of getting my (and hopefully more) work done.

I did a post on this earlier today on my blog. Didn't think I would act on it so soon, but when you visit the Apple Refurb Store, those things happen.

I'm not posting this for your approval (although that would be great to hear), I'm just making sure there's some sort of documentation should I go missing. ;)

Actually, I'm sure she'll be fine with it since I just bought her a new 15" MBPr for Christmas. If not, then I'll just take her gift away.

Then she'll kill me for sure.

Kidding! Really!

I've got a late-2013 i7/16/512 variant of the 13" rMBP, and I'm pretty pleased with it.

It handles a VM or two like a champ (when running in clamshell mode only though, so the Iris GPU doesn't have to work too hard), and it handles Photoshop CC pretty well, and even some light video editing doesn't make it break a sweat.

Good to know.

I originally was thinking of a MacBook Air, but with what I do, the retina display is pretty important. I expect I'll be doing a fair bit of Photoshop and Illustrator with it.
