same thing said my girlfriend. she thinks ipad-mini is useless if you already own an iPhone, ipad is much comfortable to use and has better performence and quality of display. the forst time I heard this, I was shocked, because most ladies would like the mini stuff. anyways she got a 4th gen, and happy with that.

Refurbs are great, under $400 for the 3rd gen iPad. The shortcoming is now the 30pin connector, we are set up with lightning everywhere and I don't any more cables or adapters. Good advice though, of we had the 4s phones I would definitely grab her a 3rd gen iPad.

Well don't just leave us hanging! What are you going to get her for Christmas now that the mini is out? You could get an Apple gift card and write iPad mini 2 on it but you could probably save that one for next Christmas.

Actually, I think a woman is no less or more likely to prefer the mini than a man. It really depends on a lot of factors. For instance, people keep saying that the smaller size of mini should make it easier for people with smaller hand to hold it. But I found that the mini is too large to hold with one hand, while if I'm using two hands, I might as well hold a full-size iPad and get the benefits of the bigger screen. A man with a bigger hand might appreciate the mini more than I, because he will be able to hold it with one hand.

Another factor is what kind of bags you usually carry. Many women do carry purses, so for them the mini would be good because it fits in their purse. But a lot of women do carry larger bags -- for instance, when I go to work I'm always carrying a large shoulder bag because I have to take letter-sized documents with me. So while I would welcome a lighter iPad, the *size* is not an issue. But a guy who wears cargo pants, or suit jacket, has pockets big enough for the mini, and I know I don't have any clothes with that big a pocket, not even my heavy winter coats.

So again, it's not more or less likely that women will prefer the mini -- it all depends.

To each their own. I bought a mini for the wife thinking we would pass the iPad2 to the kids... well after several days of use, she preferred her iPad2. I am on the ledge.. keeping my mini because its easier to take along with me. The 2.. I use for other things the require more screen space. Honestly.. an iPad mini retina would only have a clearer screen and there is a place for it as well as the full sized iPad. for now.. I will be happy with a non retina iPad mini.

Same here. Bought a mini for GF but she is now leaning to iPad 4 due to screen quality.

Returning mine as well. Retina has indeed spoiled us.

my girlfriend said no to the ipad mini too, she uses hers exclusively for uni note taking, and she deemed 7.9 inches too small for her..

Can you blame her? Same goes for the male reproductive part. Once you go big she will not want anything smaller. You know that's a compliment right?

Another pointless post about someone trying to justify the choice between an heavy old style ipad or the new gorgeous mini....

I have no idea what I'm getting her now. All I know is that the lackluster screen on the mini isn't for her. Obviously, tons of people are happy with it (or at least talking themselves into being happy with it), maybe she'll be more interested next year. For now, I'm just looking forward to seeing my 4th gen iPad show up in the next week.

Hmmm, true colours showing through with that facile comment.

A pity it's against the rules to call troll on certain posters.

How is that being a troll? I thought I would love the mini, but as soon as I saw the icons on the homescreen I knew it wasn't up to par. I wanted to like it, part of me buying it for her was so that we could have one in the house to use. My apologies for not thinking it's a perfect product, if you purchase one I truly hope you enjoy it.

I'm not calling you a troll.

I might though consider a comment like the following to be an attempt to troll.

or at least talking themselves into being happy with it.

Unless you have the ability to read the mind of every satisfied Mini owner? Or have conducted a poll with every one of the millions who have bought one since launch and have been happy to keep and use it?

I don't mind the mini's display. It's just a shame Apple didn't at least make it as nice as the one on a Nexus 7.

Yet that said, I do understand that fat gross profits are Apple's addiction.

I'm sure you also do your best to keep YOUR bank account nice and small right? And you probably work several hours for free at work.

Why do so many complain that Apple is a successful company?

I love my mini btw.

I think to some they've put so much value on retina that they cannot get past a non-retina screen. OTOH, the screen on the Nexus does seem to be better. I for one want to feel like my purchase is a good value. I'm okay with Apple's profits but if they don't do enough to make that mini seem like there is value in the purchase then I simply won't buy it.

Nice try, but your _assumption_ that I was complaining was _wrong_. It is a statement of fact.

That said, as a Apple shareholder that got in at $20 a share in the 90's, then continued to add huge number of shares each year, I've made a staggering sum.

My mini?

Like the the many new macs, pads, pods, & phones I've bought from Apple in the last 18 years, was FREE. All thanks to my investment in Apple.

I think it depends on what you're used to. If you've been using an iPad 3 for the past 6 months, the mini's screen resolution will be noticebly less sharp. Everyone else probably isn't that concerned.

I think it also depending on individual age and eyesight. Some people needs bigger fonts in order to use the tablet for a long time. And for those folks, the bigger tablet is a better choice. I think I am in that camp and will wait for a lighter and thinner Ipad 5 . For other Ipad mini is a much better size

I bought a mini for my other half last week and it has gone down a treat.

I have an iPad 2 and but to be honest, I prefer the mini. I wouldn't be surprised if that mini form factor proves to be more popular in years to come. I also don't think it's a big deal that it doesn't have a retina screen....I have an iPhone 5 (so I know what a retina screen is like) but I don't miss it on the iPad.....the screen is plenty good enough, but I'm of a generation that has grown up with far worse displays.

My mother asked for a mini for Christmas. she mainly uses an ipod touch. She did borrow my ipad 1 for awhile and didnt say anything about it not being as clear as the ipod touch. I assume the screen on the ipad 1 is not any better then the mini's. so hopefully she will like it when she receives it.
