Hi Guys
Wife's 5s screen was blacked out 2night, got it working again by holding the 2 buttons
but wondered why this has happened and what the cause would be?

It's essentially a computer that crashed. Happens once in a while. You can try to log in the diagnostic logs that you can find in settings to see what might have been behind it, but that might might not tell you much and even if it does might not be something that is necessarily reproducible all the time.

Thank you for your reply,
Bit of a wake-up call I guess, hadn't done a back-up for a long while, has been done now! :)
Phone is not that old, hope it keeps going

If it only happens once in a rare while it's not really something to worry about.
