Does the 4G ipod touch always stay connected to wifi after initially connecting? Will this continue to drain battery even though I'm not directly using it through safari, mail, etc?

yes it does stay connected (unless you become out of range) and it will drain some battery even if you are not using safari, mail etc. but are still on wifi.

It would certainly remain connected to wifi although you are not using any apps which requires it. The wifi would consistently poll for connection status and that would drain battery power but not as fast as if you are actively using wifi.

I do notice that when the iPod Touch goes into sleep mode, the wifi would turn off after a while (not sure exactly how long before it does that) and I would need to refresh the wifi connection to get connected.
