WiFi Call Quality vs Dedicated VoIP Apps

I have used VoIp apps on my iPhone and have noticed that even with my 100 Mbps Comcast connection, I hear occasional dropouts, etc. when I'm talking to someone. If there is anyone on this forum that has used both WiFi calling and VoIP apps on the iPhone, can you give me an idea of their comparative voice quality and reliability?
 
I use the Tmo wifi calling. Its much better than Google or Skype for me. Not using the Tmo router yet, just a regular Netgear.
