First post, so sorry if I missed something.
I have a 1st generation 8gb touch which has worked just fine for a couple of years. Each OS update has been done without any problems. Modest number of songs and apps, ~2gb empty.
Recently the icon in the upper left indicating a wifi connection went away. I still have a wifi connection, just no indicator. I have searched the forum and found a number of cases where this behaviour accompanied the wifi not working, but none where everything still seems ok. Any ideas?

Restart, restore

I would restart the phone, if you haven't done so already, and if that doesn't work, restore it from the latest version of iTunes. (Make sure you back up in iTunes before restoring it though).

Its been restarted several times. Once, after being off for ~15 minutes it did behave normally, but then the wifi icon went away again. I had considered a reset, but having not done that before was a bit nervous.

I stalled on the reset long enough that 3.1.2 came out. Installing it has fixed the problem for the time being.

Still Missing

I stalled on the reset long enough that 3.1.2 came out. Installing it has fixed the problem for the time being.

I have a 1st gen iTouch, the latest software updates, and it still disappears while everything seems to be working. Very annoying but what to do?

On a side note, one of the updates to an app went stupid and now it keeps asking for a my iTunes password followed by the announcement it's not right. It must keep trying because it is completely draining my battery if I just hit cancel, turn off wi-fi, and put it away.

Same problem of missing wifi logo

I have the same problem on a 1st gen 32gb iTouch. It started with 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 hasn't improved it. I have phoned and email Apple who appeared to take no notice. I also went it to my local iStore where the attitude was 'Stop complaining, wifi still works'.

It's almost like dealing with Microsoft - I expected better from Apple.

I had this problem on my iPod touch 1st gen. I just got a iPhone 3gs for christmas, restored it from my iPods backup, and now my gs has the same problem. A long while ago (around the 2.0 firmware) I jailbroke the device, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Have you guys jailbroken your devices ever? Restoring is less than an ideal option because I want to keep all the settings for all my apps as well as all my notes etc. Also when I first jailbroke the iPod (during the 1.15 firmware days) I changed the text in the top left from 'iPod' to my name. Interestingly my name transferrred in the backup as my iPhone says my name instead of 'AT&T'.

Edit: I'd also like to add that the wifi indicator does come up sometimes. It seems most likely to come up after a hard reboot.

Any ideas?
