My iMac is one generation old. I chose to do internet recovery for two reasons. It kept restarting and reading articles on here it sounded like kernal panic, which is often caused by recent faulty software installation. In this case it was the GoPro app and Quik which goes along with it.

The second reason is that i created a usb Mountain Lion USB installation stick but where the options came up it did not add the USB option where it should have.

The articles on here pretty much say that it can take an hour or more depending on your internet speed and equipment. There are no periphreals attached and the installation began about 15 hours ago now. I think that is all the relevant informaion i can think of.

Does anyone have any idea what the longest the installation time could be or any other suggestions?

How far did you get with Internet recovery? Did you get past the grey spinning globe and into the recovery utilities screen?

Start by telling us WHICH iMac you have -- what year was it made?

If it's anything recent, I don't see how it can run Mountain Lion at all (except, perhaps, under emulation)...

Nope, the globe is still spinning. It says starting internet recovery. This may take a while.

The first part of that utility is only about 650MB to get to the recovery screen. Us your Internet speed so slow that it might take so long? Otherwise, it sounds like you have a more serious underlying hardware issue here.
