My iPad was in standby for a few hours and I was looking at devices connected to my wireless router. I noticed the iPad was showing as connected. I thought that was weird, so I tried pinging the ip address of the iPad.... it replied. I have pinged it off and on for the past hour and it still replies. Why is this happening? I have fetch set to check email once an hour.

You sure? That seems to be a waste of power. I thought it only reconnects while in standby when a scheduled fetch occurs.

I am pretty sure it is...you can always change your "fetch" settings. Fetch hourly, fetch 15 mins, fetch 30 mins, etc.

That may change it, but I pretty sure it is default...

No. This is normal for the iPad. The iPhone does this because it has 3G or EDGE to back it up. The iPad doesnt, so it must remain connected. I like it. It doesn't waste power. The battery is amazing. Don't worry about wifi running down battery.

Fetch is currently set to hourly. The only thing that is push is my gmail contacts and calendar. My iPod touch disconnects from wifi when in standy and reconnects when fetching and then disconnects again. Weird.

I like it too. Better for push notifications.

OP, good question. I thought I noticed this also. Also, as soon as taken out of standby, the wifi indicator is instantly on. With my iPod touch and MacBook and Mac mini it takes about 2 seconds to reconnect.

This may be a feature, but I find it odd that the iPad is always connected to wifi, even in standby and even if nothing is using push, fetch, or notifications...

I think it's awesome because when I'm downloading TV shows off of iTunes or downloading a large app, I no longer have to disable auto-lock like I do on the iPhone.

I liked that mine is on all the time. I haven't seen it being a big problem on power thus far. I use my iPad for my E-Mail now. Much better experience sorting thru and filling them away.
