This new Wifi Sync in iOS 5 is a great idea, in theory.

My problem is, as I'm sure a lot of people are realising, my iphone and macbook are right on the desk next to each other, and yet the data is having to go from my mac, all the way to our wireless router in another room, and then all the way back to the iPhone through some pretty thick walls which is making the speed unbearably slow.

Is there any way to get the data to go straight from my macbook to my iphone, bypassing the wireless router? I remember hearing something about setting up an 'ad-hoc' wireless network with your mac so that your phone could connect to it directly....would this work in this situation??

I've noticed that wifi sync is slow as well. I think the point of it is to sync in a "low priority" mode so as to not take up a whole lot of bandwidth from your router. That's why they advertise it as, "plug it in when you charge and it will sync automatically." They assume that most people aren't really using the phone while it's charging, like at night.

That being said, since your phone is right next to your computer, why not use a cable and make the whole thing a lot faster?

Guess I will! It's one of those things we do in our modern technologically-minded world; if you have the choice to take 5 seconds to connect a cable to sync, or have something sync via invisible data streaming (read: MAGIC), I'd invariably pick the latter! But not at these speeds....
