I love the 17". I carry it along with a Lenovo T400 through airports weekly. My back isn't broken or anything. It's only a pound heavier than the 15" and most importantly you get the jaw dropping HD screen.

No regrets.

A 17" laptop is absolutely ridiculous to me! As a desktop replacement that you don't plan on whipping out in your car or at Starbucks, sure it's great.

14" is the sweet spot for me; typing on an x60 (12.1) right now, love the portability of it.

Yeah, I am selling my X200 tablet now that I have my 17" MBP.

Different strokes, I suppose.

Hey guys!I am a college student who lives in school now. Spend the most time with my laptop in the dormitory room and sometimes take it to classrooms which are about 10-minute walk away.I love the 1920*1200 screen and express card of 17. But will it be too heavy for me to carry in the campus? Wanna hear your opinions. Thanks!
PS:I'm a 75kg man;)

Not sure if it helps but I got a 15 inch after my 13 inch macbook died. I skate to class (my classes are about 25 minutes away if you walk to them).

The main reason I got a 15 inch is because of the i7 and the fact that my school's desks can barely support the 13 inch so I'm guessing the 17 inch would be way too big to fit in on the desks.

Not sure why how much you weigh matters.... I weigh 155lbs and I'm 6'0.

I love the high-res 17" myself. Not too heavy. A little too big for some seats.

Never said anything about everyone being in school. The TC just said that he was in school so I was offering my opinion as a 3rd year student. Starbucks sucks anyway :p coffee is for chumps.

I wish I got the 17 inch since I love big screens but I travel a lot and I don't think it'll be very comfortable to mess around with on planes.

I ordered a 17" for the screen size and it will be much lighter than this Dell Latitude D810 I currently lug around in my e-bag (backpack with a pocket for a laptop) so +1 on the fine to carry with a backpack comments. I don't have to worry about fitting it onto small desks though.

The only place I've had problems with my 17" on planes was international coach flights. They really do pack every person they can on those, and I'm not sure a 15" or even a 13" would have been very useful on the ones I've been on.

Domestic flights where I've actually had time to work have been fine with the 17". With internet on the airplanes now I don't even take full days off anymore when I'm traveling :)

I have a 13" MBP as I don't see the purpose 17". At that point to start getting into the desktop range of which I have the 21.5" iMac. But as always to each his/her own. As long as it's practical around school then I say go for it.

thats interesting once you get in the desktop replacement rangage over 17 why not get an imac?

The hassle/risk with the display issues (see imac forum) is a valid reason.

ps - this thread is a month old...he probably sorted out his decision by now. ;)

the ONLY place I have a problem with the 17'' is in an airplane (coach/economy seats). You won't be able to type comfortably with the laptop in your lap OR on the tray.

You have to angle the laptop and contort your body to make it fit.

EVERYWHERE else the laptop is just fine.

Anyone saying that it is too big relative to a 15'' really needs to compare the two side-by-side. The 17'' is only about one inch more on each side. Weight shouldn't be too big a deal.

The only other thing is that your choice of bags/cases will be a little more limited.

I had 17" Laptops before when they were stone heavy, It's not an issue with the MacBook Pro, especially if you don't take it out so often, and with a backpack you won't even notice the increase of size or weight

The difference in weight between the 15" and 17" is 1lb. I prefer the 15" but got the 17" since I need the expresscard slot.

If you like the 17", I say go for it. Who cares how much it weighs? In the words of Don Coreleone, "You can ACT LIKE A MAN!"

I think the 17" is simply _Outstanding_

I've used one for some time. The only reason I'm carrying a 15" at the present time, is that my travel schedule takes me all over. I never know if I'm going to have room for the footprint of a 17", or even my 15" for that matter... and yet I'm not about to go any smaller than 15 for work. For play I have the MBA.

You will love it... :)
